What are the shortest rock albums of the 60's and 70's? I was recently
surprised to find that Steve Miller's third album clocks in under 30 minutes,
and it got me wondering. Some candidates by major artists:

Beatles - Hard Day's Night (British/CD) 30:14
Miller - Brave New World 29:50
Stones - December's Children (US/CD) 29:04
Dylan - Nashville Skyline 27:06
Beach Boys - Friends 25:33

And the all time leader in this category (though not as "major" as the others):

Godz - Contact High 25:04

The shortest time for a Rock & Roll album I've heard of is the soundtrack for
the Elvis movie King Creole, which one book I read claims clocks in at slightly
more than 19 minutes.

I remember when I first got December's Children) on CD I was somewhat taken
aback by the 29 minute running time, but I've since learned that that's more
the norm than the exception for albums of that era. Most of The Beach Boys
early albums seemed to hover around the 25 minute mark, I'm pretty sure a
couple of them totaled about 24 minutes. I don't have the specific times here
with me, but The Chocolate Watchband's albums were even shorter, their third
album One Step Beyond wasn't much longer than 20 minutes.

Simon & Garfunkel's early albums were pretty short, Parsley Sage Rosemary &
Thyme is about 28 minutes 40 seconds, and in fact all five of their albums
would fit on two CDs, if you didn't mind splitting one of their albums between
two discs, and not along the division between side one & side two.

Danny Hutton (of Three Dog Night fame) had an album called Pre-Dog Night that clocks in at
22:39. Here's the track listing and song times:

2: Big Bright Eyes 2:19
3: Hang On To A Dream 2:05
4: Huff 'N Puff 1:48
5: Dreaming Isn't Good For You 2:32
6: Funny How Love Can Be 2:41
7: Home In Pasadena 2:35
8: Why Don't You Love Me Anymore 2:00
9: Monster Shindig 2:06
10: Hit The Wall 2:20

Are you sure you remember this correctly? As far as I know: "Please
Please Me" 32 minutes, "With the Beatles" 32 minutes, "Beatles for Sale" 33
minutes, "Help" were 34 minutes, "Rubber Soul" 35 minutes, and so on. Not
extremely short for these days - 25 minutes would be short even back then.

>> Van Halen's second lp from 1979 clocks in at just a little over

Same "period" late 70's Ramones represented a different genre. Not so
uncommon with short albums in those circles (Punk/New Wave). Their 1976
debut were (28:53) long, their following albums just a little more than half
an hour.

Almost all albums by Dr. Hook were between 25 and 30 minutes long.
Very disappointing for a fan like me at that time :-)

Yes, but the other extreme is no good either. I find it kind of
annoying when a new CD (not a compilation) is over 70 muniutes long.
Most CDs are what a double lp used to be and most don't justify it.
All the lesser stuff that might have been outtakes or b sides are part
of the album. When you're used to an average of 35-45 minutes it's
too much........

The Dave Clark Five has got to rank as the group with the shortest albums of
all time.

Glad All Over - around 24 minutes (11 songs)
Return! - 23:13 (10 songs)
American Tour - just under 28 minutes (12 songs)
Coast to Coast - 21:06 (11 songs, 7 under 2 minutes)
Try to Hard - 20:05 (10 songs)
Weekend in London - 23:46 (11 songs)
Having a Wild Weekend - 29:20 (12 songs)
I Like It Like That - 29:11 (12 songs)
Greatest Hits - 21:33 (10 songs)
Satisfied With You - 21:10 (10 songs)
More Greatest Hits - 21:50 (10 songs)
5 by 5 - 21:00 (10 songs)
You Got What It Takes - 22:25 (10 songs)
The Dave Clark Five Double lp - 49:51 (20 songs - this is a compilation put
out by Epic in 1968)

All are US copies.

Those weren't *US* LPs. Those are the British versions.

American LPs in those days were about three songs shorter than their
British counterparts. This was true not only of the Beatles releases,
but of most other albums as well, at least in the pop/rock realm.

It wasn't until Sgt. Pepper that the US and UK albums were the same.
(And even there I'm ignoring the "inner grove" sounds that were on the
UK but not the US pressings.)

I had a quick check on this at All Music Guide (www.allmusic.com) . You are
right about this, at least from "A Hard Day's Night" and onwards they
mention spesific UK and US version, although the US versions also are
slightly longer than you suggest.

The earliest albums are not mentioned as being released in two different
versions.

Not anymore.
The "British" albums were the albums arsa the Beatles intended to be. They
chose which soings and in which order.
Any pre-Sgt pepper LP other then the current British versions are IMO
irrelevent.

Go back to AllMusic.com and check the track listings.
Before 1987 (when the British versions came out on CD), Americans got
butchered early Beatle albums. The British versions had 14 songs
each--the American versions had 11 (12 at most, and sometimes less).

Meet the Beatles = With the Beatles - 5 songs + 3 others
The Beatles Second Album = 11 leftovers (singles & EP tracks)
A Hard Days Night (US) = AHDN (UK) - 6 songs + movie score
Something New = AHDN (UK) - 6 + 3
Beatles '65 = Beatles for Sale - 6 + 3
The Early Beatles = Please Please Me - 3
Beatles VI = 11 leftovers
Help! (US) = Help! (UK) - 7 + movie score
Rubber Soul (US) = Rubber Soul (UK) - 4 + 2
Revolver (US) = Revolver (UK) - 3
Yesterday...and Today = 11 leftovers

The first Village People album (seemed more like a 12" single, but was
catalogued as an LP) had four songs presented as three tracks and ran
about twenty minutes altogether. Their other albums were also very
short - usually six songs running for about half an hour.

There is no such thing as "gay synth pop", but anyway, even those bigots who
think there is such a term wouldn't classify Magnetic Fields as part of it.
They use a few synths, but are closer to the low-fi genre.
