I would like to start a Request for Discussion to create a new group,
rec.gardens.orchids. The charter of this group will be the discussion of orchid
care, hybridization, and saving orchids in the wild. I foresee this group as
being unmoderated. There is currently an Orchid growers discussion list, but it
uses a mail server, and is not condusive to the free flow of ideas on orchid
growing and hybridization.

Thank You,
Bob Hill

I agree that we should have a rec.gardens.orchids. Orchids are a popular
subject and we need a group for it for discussion. As it stands, the
present orchid mailing list is somewhat limited. How about it?

Could you provide the numbers of people on the mailing list. It will help show
this is justified (having seen this earlier, I believe the list is >100 but you
need to provide some numbers).

My two cents worth: YES!

Reasoning:
1. Many casual gardeners, around the world, either 'try' orchids or are
thinking about it. These are not the type to probably subscribe to the
mail list.
2. Speaking of the mail list, I finally got on it. I tried in July 93 but
some server somewhere was down and the mail couldn't get through. Never
had trouble getting USENET news.
3. If possible, international readers of USENET, especially those from
lands where most of our cultivated varieties originate, could add
horticultural value to those of us living where orchids don't grow.

Just some thoughts,
Dan

I wouldn't say the list is not conducive to the free flow.... blah
blah blah. It is quite a good resource. It is somewhat limited however. I
support the creation of an orchid newsgroup, but this has been discussed
before and there has never been enough interest generated to justify
creation. Maybe this time....

And I too agree. Orchid culture is a world unto itself.

I think this is a very good idea. I'm also on the orchid net, but this
newsgroup will be helpful.

I agree wholeheartedly with the need for an orchid group. I subscribed to
the orchid mailserver just one week ago, and I have alredy seen postings
from about five new subscribers. If this was an average week, the mail
server must be becoming unweildy.

Richard,
Although I can't find the exact letter dealing with the number of
subscribers to the mailing list, I believe that it is now 400+. If I find
the exact number I will post it. Needless to say, the mailing list is
getting a little crowded and we could use a news group. In addition,
since I have never seen a flame on the mailing list, I believe that the
signal to noise ratio on rec.gardens.orchids would be high.

Thanks for your consideration.

There is no newsgroup related to the subject of orchid cultivation. The
closest thing is rec.gardens. But that subject is crowded with other types
of discussion. Since many orchid fans and growers raise orchids
exclusively, a separate newsgroup will fulfill this niche. The orchid
mailing list is a good resource, but it cannot promote public
awareness/interest like a newsgroup can. There are many orchid activists
with net access and it would be appropriate to create a separate USENET
forum for orchid discussion.

just my thoughts...

Don't worry about exact numbers..the 400+ is enough and is what I was looking
for you to post. I knew it was a large number and was looking for a
confirmation. Your proposal has my support.
