I use Mozilla Thunderbird for mail and news. It has a few bugs now and
again, but it is lightweight and I like it a lot.

Gnus. It is probably the most capable one out there, but
you better be an expert just to read the manual!

Instead of kill files, there is a scoring system where you
can ding or enhance the score of an article based on various
criteria, setting a threshold for what you want to see.
You can, for instance read the posts from X but not when
X is replying to Y.

I have an Agilent logic analyzer hooked up to my PCI-X bus. I trigger off
the burst transfer pattern bit initiated when downloading posts from the
news server, over my PCI Ethernet card. For sure, I thought I had the
fucking thing set to detect and reject the "nemuaZ lliB" pattern, but
apparently I need to recheck my setup.

Probably an endian thing.
