Why won't the BIOS detect a new hard drive in an old(ish) laptop??

Hi / help!

I have a Mitac 5024 laptop (circa 1997) with an 850mb hard drive. I recently
tried to replace the old drive with a new Fujitsu 3.3 gig, but the Bios
wouldn't recognise it. Ive heard about the 850mb barrier, and I've tried
running Disk Manager to overcome this, but Disk manager seems to need a hard
drive already detected before it will do anything. (I only have room for one
hard drive and since the Bios wont detect it automatically or manually I'm
stuck).

Question: Do I need to upgrade my Bios in order to get it to recognise the
larger hard drive, or is there a less risky option?

Thanks for your time,

Ron

That's not the problem. If you have a 850 mb barrier or something like
that, then the larger HD would be recongized as a 850 meg. If it's not
recognized at all, you got the wrong TYPE of HD or the wrong interface.
