The P650 card works ok at AGP 4x in an old computer though.

That's right, I did download last Matrox driver for Parhelia and P650 (ver
1-04-03-005)...
My Matrox Parhelia works fine onto P4P800 Dlx mobo, OTOH I don't known if it
would be the same with a P650, I only notice they use similar driver.
I also download a Matrox utility supposed to allow showing Asus MyLogo at
boot... but I couln't make it works.

In other words, update the graphics card's BIOS. There's no other reason
why it shouldn't work in a P4P800, except possibly a compatibility
problem in the mo/bo BIOS.

You've updated the P650 driver. But have you updated the P650's bios?

Yes once...
... updating ver 1.3.0.6 -with what I think to be last bios version- using
971-13 file AFAIAC for my Pharhelia, while you should use 976-12.bin file
for your P650.
