"This is a story about a beautiful five-year-old white cat named Christmas.
Christmas came to Sun Valley Animal Shelter in July because her owner could
no longer care for her. Our vet checked her health and she was soon put up
for adoption with a SCAR (Sun Cities Animal Rescue) tag and a microchip.
All our animals are chipped in case they get lost, so any animal
organization with a scanner can identify any animal as one of ours. At the
end of July, a gentleman came to our shelter to adopt Christmas for his
wife. Fast forward to Saturday, August 31st. One of our volunteers talked
to the woman on Saturday and she mentioned she needed to get rid of the cat
because she had emphysema. Our volunteer told her to contact the shelter
directly, because our adoption contract dictates, "If you can no longer care
for this animal, you agree to bring the animal back to Sun Valley Animal
Shelter". The volunteer contacted us to let us know the woman might be
taking the cat to the Humane Society instead. Crystal, the shelter manager
for Sun Valley Animal Shelter, contacted the Humane Society on Sunday and
Monday to determine if they had our shelter cat. Crystal also contacted the
owners let them know it was written in their contract that they needed to
return the animal to our shelter. On Tuesday, September 3rd, Crystal was
finally contacted by the Humane Society about Christmas. We were told, yes
the cat did have a chip identifying the cat as being registered to Sun
Cities Animal Rescue; however, they were shown the adoption contract and
considered the person turning in the cat to be the legal owner. However, AZ
Humane Society did not read the contract because it clearly states that if
the adopter can no longer care for the animal, they are to return it to Sun
Valley Animal Shelter. Crystal was told that Christmas did not meet the
humane society's criteria for adoption, and had been euthanized. We
received no phone call and no message asking us if we wanted to pick
Christmas up, when in fact, we had a multitude of staff and board members
who would have gone to the Humane Society within the hour if we had been
notified. But, no one at the Humane Society ever attempted to contact our
shelter. One phone call and Christmas would still be alive today.
We must contemplate how "humane" our local humane society is.."

That's just sick. Isn't the AZ Humane Society where the Director fired
employees for taking kittens home to foster when they were supposed to
be euthanized? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Regardless, this
story is pretty pathetic. Thanks for sharing, though. We need to know
the good *and* the bad about our shelters.

This happens constantly in the shelter systems to purebred
breeders, many of whom are desperately trying to do the right thing by
their cats.
I personally know a breeder who, after working exhaustively
with an owner (and who had a 'right of first refusal clause' in her
contract) found out that the cat (a Bengal) had been dropped at a
shelter. She drove out, identified the cat, showed them her copy of
the contract, and offered to pay the full adoption fee for their
trouble. The shelter refused, saying that the owner had signed the
cat over to them. Luckily, the cat was eventually adopted a few weeks
later, and the new owners contacted her (she left her number at the
shelter and begged the employees to give it to the adopter or call her
if they were going to euthanise) and the story ends happily.
The other story I have personal experience doesn't end so
happily. A Bengal breeder I know had a stud boy escape from his
outdoor run. He was chipped, and she immediately circulated his
pictures and description to every shelter in a 25 mile radius. He was
a Regional Winner, Quad Grand Champion, and a beloved pet. The ASPCA
found him, and, despite having picture, description, and microchip
info, neutered him and placed him. (She found out when he went in for
his checkup with his new owners and the vet found his chip and called
her). When she went to the ASPCA to find out how exactly this had
happened, they told her that they "depend on adoption fees, and since
there's a waiting list for Bengals........"
It's disgusting, it really is.

Well, that's Cheryl Naumann for you. The AHS is just deteriorating under her
"leadership."

I won't complain too much though. It is good to receive any kind of
publicity about the station and I was thrilled to be asked to appear on the
show. I just wish when they thanked me for being a guest they could have
also thanked Isis. Isis was very good being on my lap for the 5 minutes and
Marge Wright commented that Isis had a beautiful coat. Isis was stressed and
I ended up doing the show with cat hair all over me. I think all in all the
positives of doing the show outweighed the negatives. If it gets cats
adopted then that is the important thing. I was jazzed being on this episode
of "Pets" and if I end up being asked to be on the show again then I think
I'll bring Jade. Of course if I get asked to do national shows like the
Tonight Show both cats might travel with me so I can alternate between the
two. I know Ripley's is interested in doing a story about Cat Galaxy but
their plan is to come to Arizona to shoot the episode. Good thing too since
cats perform much better at home. I know when Channel 3 was here to
interview me the cats did just fine for the most part. It was besides the
Tribune interview the best one yet. TV is much more delicate though and you
need a fine sense of balance behavior-wise. In other words be cool and
polite. The Channel 3 interview was here in the home and much more
comfortable and I was allowed to be myself. When you do a show like "Pets"
you need to be prim and proper. Thus far I have been relaxed and didn't even
worry about the cameras being there. BTW, in case any of you are wondering
the Channel 3 studio where they film the news and "Pets" is a lot smaller
than you might think. I did see a couple of the news people though from a
distance but didn't get to meet any of them.
All in all "Pets" was really nice but too rushed for my taste. I am sure
I'll be doing more shows and interviews about Cat Galaxy and thus get to
mention my company Panther TEK. I feel like a local celebrity now and
totally worthy of all of this attention. I truly feel good and blessed. I
only hope I can make it national now so I can help cats in other places as
well and maybe spread some important messages about cats and how they need
good loving homes instead of being dumped. To me that would be the icing on
a very nice cake. Meow!
