you should have hcfmodem and modem listed in device manager

the user interface .dll file, it probably is not installed
properly.
> 3. Should COM2 show up in the Device Manager for a PCI modem?
there should not be a com2 listed in the device manager, it is a
virtual port created by software for the modem.

you should start the computer in safe mode and remove all modems
and com ports from the device mananger and reboot to get these installed
properly.

What do you mean? An African or European swallow?
Yes, you should have the modem listed and the HCFMODEM: PCI Modem
Enumerator
> 2. What is modemui.dll and why is it giving me an error?

This is a Windows file, most likely giving the error because the modem
drivers are mis-installed

No, there will be no Com port listed for the modem under Ports (COM &
LPT). The HCFMODEM is the modem's virtual serial port, the IRQ use by it
is the modem's IRQ (The modem listing will not show the IRQ, only the
Input/Output Range.

More than likely, yes

English or European?

Uninstall the modem in Add/Remove Programs, Reboot, Windows should
first find a 'PCI Communications Device' (the modem's virtual serial
port), when asked for the manufacturers disk or drivers, just point
Windows to the modem' drivers.
Note: Even if prompted for the Windows CD, you must continue to point
Windows to the modem drivers for the modem to be properly installed.

Try the drivers from here,
http://www.modulartech.com/modem.htm
They are the ones I use.
And also here,

Thanks for the reply Derek. I tried reinstalling (several times) in safe
mode, in normal mode, selective resotre...all have the same result as
originally described. The modem control panel doesn't see the modem,
but can communicate with it from the Diagnostics->More Info tab.
The really odd thing is that the modem drivers appear to be loaded
correctly. I can communicate with the modem and use a terminal emulator
that communicates directly with the modem (ie. doesn't use TAPI) and it
works just fine.
I think I have a registry problem. Does anyone know where/how in the
registry the modem info is stored?
If I could just get the Modems Control Panel to see the modem on COM2, I'd
be set.
Thanks,
Russ

I was all set to do just that (ie. do a full Reinstall), but thought I'd
try one more thing...and by damn if it didn't fix it.
Here's what I did, hopefully it will help someone:
1. Uninstall the modem and all related drivers by performing the
Add/Remove Programs on the Modem enumerator.
2. Make sure the modem was removed from the device manager. In my case
they were, but if not you could remove them from the device manager as
well. For my PCI modem there were two items: the modem enumerator and the
PCI modem itself.
3. Restart either in safe mode or decline the option to install the modem
when the Install Wizard pops up in normal mode.
4. Open Regedit and edit the Modem entry as follows:
Go to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem key
(looks like a folder). There should be 3 items for this key which are
all string entries and should look like this:
(Default) "Modem"
Icon "0"
Installer "Modem.Cpl"
If they don't look like that, edit them so that they do.
5. Quit Regedit and reboot.
6. Windows will now try to rinstall the modem. Do it as you normally
would. All should be well now.
In my case the Icon and Installer enries were gone and replaced with a
Link to something so the Modem.Cpl (control panel) was never seeing the
changes. Pretty straightforward once you know what to look for. After
making the above changes it reinstalled just fine. It really helped
having another machine without a modem to look at the registry and see
what it was supposed to look like prior to any modem installation. This
sort of leads to another question: Is there a sample "virgin" registry
somewhere that could be used for reference for problems like this?
I hope this can help somebody. Many thanks to all who responded to my
original post/plea for help. Good to know there are so many folks out
there willing to take the time to help.
