Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup for this query, but here goes.

When I first open IE5.5 the window is maximised, previously when further
windows were opened via right clicking on 'open in new window' on a
hyperlink the window would also be opened maximised.

Additionally the IE5.5 windows launched from MSN Messenger is also not
maximised and it previously was.

Now these new windows are not being opened maxmised, even if I maxmise them
once open this setting is not being retained as it previously was.

I cannot work out why the window settings are not being retained or where to
correct ths, e.g. registry key, INI file.

I have encountered this problem once before and after hours of trying to
correct it gave up and reinstalled IE5.5, this does correct the problem.

Before I go down this path once more, does anyone know how this irritating
fault can be rectified ?.

Thanks in advance.
Matthew.

Matthew,

This trick should work.

Remove any 'Auto-hide' option for the taskbar and while the window is
maximized, increase the height of the taskbar from one row to two. Allow the
maximized window to reset itself to fit into the new area allowed by the
taller taskbar. Now return the taskbar to its normal single row. This is to
try to make Windows re-calculate the window size and boundaries.

If no joy, run regedit and remove these registry key values which are most
likely corrupted:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\internetexplorer\Desktop\Explorer\desktop\oldWorkAre
as\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.

Note that windows opened from hyperlinks do not open by default maximised
(favorites and links and links that open in new windows). Now for the
workaround in this case:

My friend Ronnie Vernon first posted this if I remember rightly.

Start IE5, right click any URL and select Open in a New Window.
Go back to the first IE5 window you opened and close it.
Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen.
(Do not use the maximize button)
Close this second window, using the close box.
All IE5 windows should now open maximized.

Or here's an old trick...

Have window already open, but minimised to the taskbar. Drag the link down
to the button, hold it there until the window opens then drop the link in.
