In a letter published January 1942 in Dai-Nichiren, a Nichiren Shoshu
magazine to all Nichiren Shoshu priests, Nikkyo Shonin writes:

The 29th Admonition
To all Nichiren Shoshu priests

As we declared war against the United States today, I was overwhelmed by a
deep feeling. More than four years have passed since our Empire punished the
tyrannical Chiang Kai-Shek (like the "Rape of Nanking"?) the administration
to launch the creation of the new order in East Asia. Japan, Manchuria, and
China now enjoy mutual friendship and prosperity due to these
accomplishments. However, the United States and Britain have ignored these
facts, and continued to support the Chongqing government to keep it engaged
in hostilities against us. They have also attempted to hamper us with
economic sanctions. They called upon their allies to form a militaristic
encirclement to threaten us and obstruct the Imperial scheme. Although the
Imperial Government patiently sought to reach a resolution peacefully, the
United States and Britain not only arrogantly refused it but also denied the
Imperial principle. We should not allow ourselves to accept their abuse any
longer. Our Empire and its great achievements are faced with a serious
crisis. The Japanese Empire has thus entered war against them resolutely. We
must stand up to overcome all obstacles as the heirs of Japan's immortal
history of over 2600 years.

Fortunately, the Empire is endowed with an army and navy of unrivaled valor
and loyalty under the imperial authority. They have already made remarkable
achievements upon the very opening of this war. We profoundly appreciate
their efforts, and their success is expected to continue. However, in light
of the surrounding circumstances, this war will last for a long time, and we
must be ready for that.

Based on the Buddha's mandate, we must now summon our faith to endure all
and take part in ensuring our victory in this unprecedented war.

December 8, 1941
Nikkyo Suzuki, High Priest, Nichiren Shoshu.
The January New Years greeting message by the same High Priest Nikkyo
Shonin in 1942 reads:
"We, the Japanese Empire, have declared war against the United
States
and Britain. Within three days after the outbreak of the war, we
achieved brilliant results in the entire Pacific. The luxurious
British fleet suffered a crushing defeat, like a crumbling palace. In Hawaii
and Manila, we were able to achieve great results that are unparalleled in
the history of the world. These results not only
moved the people of Japan to tears but aroused a deep sense of
gratitude in them, which struck the whole world with amazement and
admiration. Consequently, our Imperial Navy secured the command of
the ocean and the skies of the Pacific.
Now, I pray that the people behind the guns, regardless of whether
they are young or old, men or women, will not be elated by victory
together with the fighting forces who were devoted to the sacred war, but
rather will not neglect to tighten their helmet strings after victory. With
an indefatigable spirit and a strong unity as hard as iron and stone, I
hope, they will keep their posts of responsibility, summon up their courage,
strengthen their faith and, in obedience to the Imperial decree, persist in
their devoted services to the country. The peace and security of the land
will be achieved only when the festival of the Mystic Law is held."

There is also a published Memo issued by Josei Toda, prior to his
incarceration by the Military government which tells the members
that it is okay to accept Shinto Talismans and they can be
"discarded later. " Neither side are lily white in terms of non-Buddhist
nationalistic feeling. Many were jailed but not necessarily for as noble
causes as one may wish to think. However the main outcome in terms of the
Nichiren Shoshu Sokagakkai was that Josei toda began to take Buddhism
seriously and while for the first time, he actually studied the Lotus Sutra
deeply and then experienced a profound thing. That experience was the
motivator for the transformation in his own life and also the hidden
motivator of millions of people. At the same time his experience did not
make a perfect person by any means. Ultimately the awe and shock of the
profound religious experience, to varying degrees, is the origin of all
religion. In Nichiren Daishonin's day Japan was so absorbed with internal
warfare that they were not spending their time with imperialist goals.

A High Priest is only a regular human being, subject to the same
kinds of prejudices, ignorance and stupidity as anyone. A High
Priest is not immune to superstitions or the socially corrupt
political ideas, shared by a society. As we see above the 62nd High
Priest was praising the Japanese military government's efforts
after the attacks in the pacific. Furthermore there is no mention of
the "Rape of Nanking." He states:

"As we declared war against the United States today, I was
overwhelmed by a deep feeling. More than four years have passed since our
Empire punished the tyrannical Chiang Kai-Shek administration to launch the
creation of the new order in East Asia. Japan, Manchuria, and China now
enjoy mutual friendship and prosperity due to these accomplishments.
However, the United States and Britain have ignored these facts, and
continued to support the Chongqing government to keep it engaged in
hostilities against us."

Now the "Rape of Nanking," (see http://www.tribo.org/nanking/) was a
horrible massacre to the Chinese people.

This Web Site about this event states:

"Between December 1937 and March 1938 at least 369,366
Chinese civilians and prisoners of war were slaughtered by the
invading troops. An estimated 80,000 women and girls were raped; many of
them were then mutilated or murdered.
THE SAVAGERY OF THE KILLING WAS AS APPALLING AS ITS SCALE.
Thousands of victims were beheaded, burned, bayoneted, buried alive, or
disemboweled. To this day the Japanese government has refused to apologize
for these and other World War II atrocities, and a significant sector of
Japanese society denies that they took place at all." The Rape of Nanking by
James Yin and Shi Young, with foreword by the Most Rev. Desmond M. Tutu and
preface by Prof. Ying-shih Yü."

How could the High Priest of Nichiren Shoshu be praising the Military
government's war efforts, saying about the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor
and other atrocities, "we achieved brilliant results in the entire Pacific?"
Or praising the monstrous acts of their
government against the Chinese, saying, "More than four years have passed
since our Empire punished the tyrannical Chiang Kai-Shek administration to
launch the creation of the new order in East Asia. Japan, Manchuria, and
China." ?

Of course in the Human Revolution novel, this was ignored and the
High Priest Nikkyo was referred to as exemplifying the spirit of
Nichiren Daishonin. Not until many years later did the Sokagakkai,
tell the truth about---and that was only for their own propaganda
purposes once they had already been excommunicated for issues related to the
many years of Daisaku Ikeda allowing people to suggest he was the "True
Buddha."

At the same time, Nichiren Shoshu was misguided and dogmatic, in
using the grounds of a speech where Daisaku Ikeda had told the
laypeople that the Four Dictums of Nichiren Daishonin was no longer
applicable in today's world, to begin their remonstration with
Ikeda. Besides this shallow view, the "Ode to Joy" verses in
Beethoven's Ninth being sung by the SGI at meetings, was frowned
upon as being Christian, when in fact it is a Poem by Schiller referring to
an ancient Nature God and is no grounds for excommunication.

Overall, the surface of the schism is misunderstandings directed by
misplaced pride and ego coming from both sides of the dispute.
Anyone who was aware and involved in the Sokagakkai in the
1970's knows that there was an over abundance of superstitious ideas about
Mr. Ikeda being spread throughout the membership, which glorified him as
more then human, yet the Priest Reverend Tono and others who brought this to
the attention of Nichiren Shoshu, were excommunicated and the schism in
1991, used the excuses mentioned above as the grounds for excommunication.

With all of these misunderstandings and the misguided fanaticism
coming from both sides of the schism, it is a wonder that there are
still any western followers or that western members have not as yet
severed their ties to these Japanese dictatorial hierarchies, which
are throwbacks to the Middle Ages of Japan that continue even today.
In 1998, the Japanese ambassador to the United States, Kunihiko
Saito, defended Japan, calling the best selling book, "The Rape
of Nanking," mentioned above as "onesided and inaccurate."
The same year, a Japanese film, "Pride, the Fateful Moment," about Gen.
Hideki Tojo, which portrayed the general as a victim of the United States,
was quite popular.

June 5, 2000 the Mainichi Times reported about the use of the
Japanese term "kokutai" by the Prime minister Mori:
"Opposition party leaders have been quick to blast Prime Minister
Yoshiro Mori's ability to lead the nation after yet another blunder
in which he used the obsolete term kokutai during a speech he made on
Saturday in Nara.
Like his earlier "divine country" gaffe, the use of word kokutai is
controversial because the word, often used before and during World
War II, denotes the fundamental character of the country as one with the
Emperor as its core.

"Amid the controversy over the 'country of gods' remark, Mori's
continued gaffes show his true intentions (to allow the nation's
sovereignty to reside with the Emperor)," Liberal Party leader Ichiro Ozawa
said Sunday. "Mori, in making a remark that could deny the sovereignty of
the people, has proven that he is not fit to be prime minister."

Mori used the word kokutai when he described and criticized a move by the
opposition camp to ally against the coalition led by Mori's
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
"I heard (Kazuo) Shii of the Japanese Communist Party on the radio
saying opposition parties have to join hands to overthrow the
tripartite coalition. As the Communist Party is insisting in its
principles, it would not recognize the Imperial system, and it would break
up the Self-Defense Forces (if the Communists take power)," the prime
minister said.

Mori then blurted out, "How then could we ensure Japan's public
safety and secure the nation's kokutai?"
Opposition parties say they will question the use of the remark
during their campaign for the June 25 House of Representatives
election.
Yukio Hatoyama, the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan,
said, "(Saturday's remark) shows he is in favor of the pre-war
concept of the nation centering on the Emperor. The remark will
probably be criticized by foreign countries. I have no choice but to
conclude that he is not a suitable prime minister."
Ruling coalition kingpins desperately tried to defend the prime
minister and douse the flames of the furor.
LDP Secretary-General Hiromu Nonaka said, "(Kokutai in the context of Mori's
speech) means currently observed democracy."
Takeshi Noda, secretary-general of the junior coalition partner
Conservative Party said that Mori didn't have the pre-war
constitutional system in mind.
But both Nonaka and Noda admitted that Mori should have been more
careful."

The Prime Minister Mori was the head of the Coalition government made up of
the Liberal Democratic Party, the New Komeito (SGI) and the New Conservative
Party.

It is amazing to me that the Nichiren Buddhists in the west do not
remonstrate with their Japanese counterparts to tell them to stay out and
let us be democratic within our organizations for propagation.

The High Priest above referred to the "Buddha's Mandate for
victory" as the Japanese war against the world. This clearly is a evil
remark, that mixes the kokutai arising from Shinto mythology with Buddhism
and is equally as twisted as Ikeda followers bestowing upon him the special
status of True Buddha. In the real spirit of
Buddhism the term True Buddha, refers to all people, not to an
individual charismatic leader, who creates his own mythology.

Both sides of the schism have invalidated the other side and at the same
time cried wolf, by lying---making even their valid arguments look
suspicious. It is time for this to end but cowards and gang mentality
abound.

The Nichiren buddhists in western countries need to take responsiblity for
this and do what is necessary.

August 1993
Daisaku Ikeda -- statesman, billionaire, god

Daisaku Ikeda's followers believe he is the earthly incarnation
of a saint; those who believe otherwise suffer his
god-like wrath.

Daisaku Ikeda should be powerful -- he has karma on his side.
Enough karma to lure over 12 million followers to his radical
Buddhist sect. Enough to pour trillions of yen into schools and
plush "cultural centers" worldwide. Enough to ensure audiences
with royals, business leaders and former prime ministers. In fact
65-year-old Ikeda has enough karma to achieve almost
anything. So why is he thought to be so contemptible?

A small, plump man with a permanently smug look, Ikeda joined
the religious group Soka Gakkai in 1947 and quickly earned
a reputation as a phenomenally effective fund-raiser. This is said
to have assured his rise through the ranks and proved a
strong weapon in the battle for succession between Ikeda and a
rival in 1960, when Chairman Josei Toda died.

According to Ikeda's former right-hand man Yukimasa Fujiwara
-- one of many who have left the group to protest their
leaders dictatorial style -- Ikeda won the chairmanship by quietly
paying off executives.

Ikeda, then only 32, quickly persuaded followers that the more
converts and money they brought in, the better their karma.
The subsequent membership drive lured one-tenth of the nation's
population and millions of others worldwide, including
celebrities such as Tina Turner, Patrick Swayze and Herbie Hancock.

But conquering the spiritual realm wasn't enough for Ikeda. In
1957, he had thousand of members register as residents in a
district where a Gakkai-backed candidate needed votes. The
candidate won, but Ikeda spent 15 days in prison for violating
election law.

His political aspirations took further shape in 1964, when he
launched the Komeito party which, with huge funds and millions
of votes, grew into the Diet's second-largest opposition party.

The Komeito has cast the deciding vote in debates such as the
1988 consumption tax and the 1991 PKO bills, giving Ikeda
-- an unelected party leader -- awesome sway over crucial
domestic issues. "The Komeito can't make any decisions without
his consent," claims Tokyo Insideline's Takao Toshikawa.
"President Ikeda," as he is called by his English-speaking followers,
is a larger-than-life figure and a skilled orator.

He is also known as an arrogant and mean-spirited man who taunts
Gakkai executives at meetings. Yet his combination of
religious aura and political clout has proved devastatingly successful.

Soka Gakkai now has eight universities, schools, kindergartens and
other centers around the world. It recently completed an
extravagant international HQ on 580 acres of prime Santa Monica
estate. Glossy press packs burst with photos of Ikeda
meeting Gorbachev, Thatcher, Mitterand and Kissinger. Before
Ikeda visits his many schools and centers, his aids are
deployed to hand out gifts of soft drinks. After one visit to Soka
University in Hachioji, students proudly displayed the empty
cans in shoeboxes inscribed with the words: "Presents of
encouragement from Ikeda sensei." It is also no secret that Ikeda
desperately wants a Nobel Peace Prize; he has met with many
Nobel laureates and donates huge sums to charitable causes
such as Cambodian refugees, Ethiopian projects and Palestinian
education.

Ikeda's followers consider him the earthly incarnation of the
Nichiren Daishonin saint; those who believe otherwise have felt
the wrath of this self-appointed god. When writer Hirotatsu
Fujiwara tried to publish a critical book in 1969, Ikeda employed
then-LDP Secretary General Kakuei Tanaka to persuade
Fujiwara to halt publication (He had him arrested on bogus
charges); the author also claimed that a KGB-Iike campaign
against him included death-threats and surveillance.

The scandal that erupted after these revelations forced
Ikeda's aides to apologize and soon after, to announce the formal
separation of Soka Gakkai from the Komeito. This
restructuring was little help to Komeito Diet member Toshio Ohashi, who
complained about Ikeda's megalomania in 1988. On
Ikeda's nod, Soka Gakkai withdrew its support on the grounds that
Ohashi had been receiving illegal campaign contributions.
Without Gakkai's funds and votes, Ohashi had no choice but to
resign from the Diet. The message was clear: nobody
argues with The President.

Such incidents have blemished Ikeda's saintly veneer, but
have hardly dented his power base. Ikeda continues to be
consulted by top politicians such as Noboru Takeshita and,
ccording to the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho, Soka Gakkai
held four fund raising events this year for last month's elections.

Ikeda is reportedly wooing both strands of the nation's
political future: Takeshita, the old style LDP godfather; and Ichiro
Ozawa, the young iconoclast, whose party might soon prosper
from Ikeda's generosity.

Japan's political map is being redrawn, and Daisaku lkeda --
statesman, billionaire, god -- seems intent to play his part.
