A friend of mine wants to buy one of these (I figure it's probably a
cheapo Magnavox unit with a Philips logo on it), and the price is good, so
I thought I'd see if anyone out there had any comments on these units?

My initial impulse is to avoid Philips stuff, but like I say it's cheap
and he's not a high-tech videophile.

Any info would be appreciated.

It would be the other way around. Magnavox is a subsidiary of Philips, as is
SV2000, Sylvania, and Marantz. Philco is a subsidiary of K-Mart.

Terrible. It's slow! It takes forever to load a DVD. The remote for this
machine has one of the worst layouts I've ever seen!

Philips usually makes their own decks, but the 710AT is one of those "bastard"
players. The 710ATs are actually made by Funai. To give you a clue as to
their quality, Funai has made VCRs under their own brand, under their Symphonic
brand, and for Philips. You know the kind! The type where the buttons are so
stiff that you'd be liable to push the featherweight VCR off the entertainment
centre when you attempt press PLAY.

Philips DVD players are okay, but I would advise your friend to get a Sony,
Panasonic, Toshiba, or Pioneer player. They'll cost about as much, but will
have superior quality. If your friend still insists on a Philips player, show
him to a 711AT, which is not a bad player. The 710AT is, quite simply, junk.

A follow-up to my own post to clear confusion. Philco was a subsidiary of
Philips, but had been acquired by K-Mart. Royal Philips is still its own
corporate entity. - Reinhart

P.S. Philips also owns Norelco.
