I got this error message when trying to add a Windows 2003
server as a domain controller to a Windows 2000 Active
Directory domain after addprep /forestprep
and /domainprep : Access denied when transfer the server
computer account to a domain controllers account.

It sounds as though you may be interested in removing the DC from the
domain before promoting it to a domain controller. Chances are, this
is what you originally attempted to do, where you were stopped by the
"Active Directory not compatible" error. When dcpromo is continued
(by defualt), it will NOT add the 2003 server as a domain controller
(because it can't), but it WILL add the server as a domain member
(because it CAN??!!??).
The above situation is probably where you are currently standing. In
the computer properties of the 2003 server, remove it from the domain
by adding it instead to a ficticiously named Work Group. Then, on a
DC, ensure that the Active Directory Users and Computers Snap-in does
not show the 2003 machine in the "Computers" container in the domain.
If it does, delete it.

After the 2003 box has been removed as a domain member, DCPromo should
run much more smoothly.
