I'm going to be putting in an x10 system and who knows what else. The question
is, is it worth it to install a whole house surge suppressor?

Absolutely.

I have a Leviton unit and like it.

I would say yes. Even if you don't own computers or televisions, you
won't have to look forward to replacing wall switch modules every month
or so, like I used to before I installed a whole house supressor.

If you're going to do something, do something worth doing.

Good idea. Remeber that sensitive electronics should have their own
dedicated supressor as well.

Leviton makes a unit (51120-1) and also has a model (51120-PTC) that addes telephone
and cable surge protection. Just got the PTC model from Worthington
(www.worthdist.com) yesterday for $165 ($135ish for the non-PTC model). This is for a
new house so it is not yet installed. The Telephone and Cable supressors are
replaceable should they get hit. If the main unit is hit, it appears the whole unit
has to be replaced.

There are models that are a little cheaper, but don't have a good of protection. Of
course, there are units with higher prices and "better" protection as well. The
Leviton unit seems pretty popular across the newsgroup, although that may largely
driven by its availability from the various retailers / distributors.

I have the Leviton unit available at my website
(http://www.futurestandard.com)

I also have the Panamax unit for $99 (which I like a little better
than the Leviton).

The Panamax has an audible alarm to let you know that a strike has
occurred that has damaged the unit. It also has a convenient ground
bar for easy grounding of things like PBX's, Alarms, etc.

Leviton makes a power supressor that's pretty good. (Around $50.00, I
forget the model). My phone supressors(I have 8, 1 on each line) are
from Tripp-lite (TS-1, around $30.00 each), and the cable supressor is
something that I modified down from LAN equipment - I couldn't find
a CATV supressor that I liked. I've forgotten who made the thing,
though - it might have been Black Box.

Over the years I've had to spend way too much time & $$ replacing toast,
so I tend to get a little Tim Taylor on the subject of protection.

Can these suppressors be installed by a DIY'er or do you need an
elecrician?

If you can add a circuit breaker and the appropriate wiring to an
electrical box, then you can install a whole-house surge suppressor.

The installation is very similar to a phase coupler, 2 black wires
(one to each phase), and two neutral wires.

Along with the two black wires, I have a white wire and a green wire. Were
do these connect?
