Hi,

Does anybody know how to create Apple Mac OS X icons? Look at the main page
of apple. Today, it shows the announcement of Apple Mac OS 10.1, showing
also some icons "flying" around the Mac OS X CD. Unfortunately I don't have
a Mac, I am using Linux and Win98.

I guess they didn't use The Gimp, however, is it possible to use it to get
such results? Should I use other software too, like Blender?

I am a little bit familiar with The Gimp and would like to improve my
knowledge; I know, I wouldn't be able to create such icons in the next few
weeks or months ;-) but I just would like to have some hints which software
I should use so that I can begin learning it.

Thanks a lot for your help,
Stefan

Er, no, it does not.

If you are looking for a way to make Aqua type buttons, there is a
tutorial on <http://gug.sunsite.dk> that shows exactly how to do this.
With GIMP, you have the advantage that you can automate the process by
using script-fu, so some kind soul has also provided a script to make
Aqua like buttons.

Is this what you meant?

Raphael Quinet has written a similar script-fu script to the one on
the GUG web site. It can be found at:

<http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/gimp/aquapill-logo.scm>

The GUG script and Raphael's script produce different results, so you
should try them both.

There is a script that can generate buttons for you. Check this site
out. http://www.linuxmag-france.org/redactor_zone/aquapl.html5

There is also another site that shows you how to do it manually with
GIMP.

Hi

I'm not sure about creating Mac OS X icons, other than what
is offerred with the guash/folder option.

However, I'm running a Mac OS X system as well, and I
hav the MacGIMP; do you use the MacGIMP?

If so, can you help me understand how to get MacGIMP
to load all of the text fonts that are used in the "TextEdit"
application in Mac OS X? I can get my GIMP for Windows
to accept all of the fonts that my MS Word appliction
uses (as well as all fonts on my PC).

Any help would help, and I can look further into the
icons question.

Actually they've used Maxon Cinema 4D for the core Apple Icons and some
Pixel Graphics- Software for the touchup. You can create those Icons
with any Program but you've got to be a talented artist to do that. It's
not a matter of Software, no Program will do it all for you. Frankly,
you could do it with Paint! (Okay, then you've got to be *extremely*
talented...)

But to answer you question: GIMP is indeed a good starting point to
begin learning it. In that case you could also be learning Blender.

If you can spend money on Software and use windows you might buy data
beckers new 3D- Program available here in Austria. Data Becker is
producing a lot of crap but this time they've bought out assets from
Maxon. The original Product is called Cinema 4D Go and is a bit more
expensive than Beckers copy which is literally the same Product, except
for the name.
