Questions for audiophile

Questions for audiophiles:

I have been out of the high end audio scene for some time and feel
snowed under trying to reenter. To make a long story short, I am
presently working with two Denon power amps, a pre-amp, a Proton
surround sound decoder, and four speakers. All of my equipment is
nine years old. I thought it was time to enter the digital age by
purchasing a DVD player (Sony DVP-S7000 or Toshiba DS-9000) with all
the latest surround sound enhancements. My first reality check came
when I realized that this was not enough, and I would additionally
need a digital decoder. After reading the specs on the decoder (Sony
SDP-EP9ES ), I discoveedr it hooks up to a digital receiver. It
appears that everything I look at hooks up to something else to make
it work.

My question is: do I have to throw three perfectly good amps away
and buy a digital multi-amp receiver to join the digital revolution,
or is there a way to work around the problem with my ancient
amplifiers? My main speakers are a pair of 4 ohm Apogee Duetta
Signature lls; my next question is would a receiver like the Sony
STR-DA90ESG be able to drive them considering I have a Velodyn ULD 15
with a 400-watt separate amp hooked up to them?

In a nutshell, I hate to get rid of my Denons, but will do so if this
is the only way to join the digital DVD world. Any opinion and
advice will be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about the Sony 90ES reciever, but I do know that the
new 50ES has pre-outs which would allow you to keep your Denon amps
and the you would just have to use the reciever for the center and
surrounds. This reciever does DD and DTS and is an all around great
performer.
