Recently we've had some lighthearted threads going (favorite dog
toys, what I like best about my dog) that I've really enjoyed.
Here's another topic that just occurred to me. I might turn out to
be the only person even remotely interested in this, but it's
worth a try...

I'd love to find out the stereotypically "common" dog names in
various countries. I mean REALLY common; so common that when you
hear them, you are 99.9% certain they're dog names. If there are actually
translations for the names you post, feel free to throw them in, too.
I'm not counting names such as Rin Tin Tin. I mean, sure, most people
recognize it as a dog name, but not because it's common.

Here, I'll start things off with a short U.S. list:

Country COMMON dog names
---------------- -------------------
USA Spot, Rover, Fido,
Bowser, Towser, Rex,
Ajax

I'm sure there are other quite common U.S. dog names, but I'm not
hitting on all cylinders at the moment. Come on, fire up those gray
cells! Let's see how many countries will be represented.

Cheers,

I can't speak for other countires, but man, when I worked at the vet, we had
some ones that got boring real quick! (keep in mind that I don't mean the
"every" literally!)

*Every cocker was named Buffy, Lady, or Muffin.
*Every Sib Husky was Tasha.
*Every Yorkie was named Rambo. (Yes, I have the breed right!)
*Every Lab was Bear, as were most of the GSDs.
*Goldens were Dusty, Rusty, Brandy, or Sandy.
*Dachshunds were always something like Schnitzel, Fritz, Hans, Schatsie, or
anything else blatantly German.
*Poodles...had to be 2 syllables, repeating, and ending in the "ee" sound, such
as Fifi, Gigi, Mimi, Bebe, Kiki...get the point?

Gawd, I had to laugh at the UNoriginality of some of these parents!!

Don't forget Luke, Duke, and (if you have a hound) Old Yeller.

Ajax? I've never heard of that. Is that because he gets the plates
shiney clean?

I heard a joke once, of two dogs that were called Soap and Water.
[[[ Hey! - these plates are dirty - they still have food stuck on them.
Well, that's as clean as Soap and Water could get them]]]

I recently read somewhere that the four currently most common dog
names in the US are: Max, Duchess, Shadow, and Sheba.

Of those four names, our County Sheriff's dog team uses three!

THere are also some very common names to particular breeds. I
can't count how many Rottweilers I know that are named Bear.
As for chocolate Labs, Hershey, Cocoa, and Mocha are the most
popular.

I'd count Lassie in this, as well; I remember three different
you-know-the-breed dogs when I was growing up. Shep is another one;
you Elvis fans should've posted this one before I did :-)

*I* always think it's funny when parents let their kids name
the dog (or cat, for that matter). I know a Fuzzy (male Golden),
Fluffy (male cat), and a few dogs named Puppy (small white Heinz 57's).
One of the dogs named Puppy was a dog my dad had as a kid.

Michele, I agree these are considered dogs names, but as my vet was saying
last weekend, he's never met a fido, or rover, or bowser. So, I bet common
dog names are more like Bear, Sam, to name a few that I can think of more
than one dog I know with the same name. But, I'm interested in seeing the
results & thanks for starting the thread. Maybe we could call them
stereotypical dog names?

Well, we have a siberian husky whose shortened call name is Tasha, but when
we do her obedience work and mostly in public, we use her real call name:
Natasha ... not quite so unoriginal :-)

Here' s akinda funny common dog name story..
My around-the-corner neighbors are czechoslavakian (sp? which is
irrelevant except for the fact that they barely speak English).
So, we'd been living in the neighborhood a few months and I'd greeted
them quite a few times as I walked by, I'd stop and give their collie
'Lassie' a pet when he came out to greet me. After a while I started
getting a feeling that 'Lassie' kind of looked different every time I
saw him, face coloring or something, but I couldn't quite peg it. It
was kinda starting to bother me, when one day I walk by a there are
2 collie heads lookin over the fence at me. Both of these collies are
named 'Lassie'. Then as if that weren't enough, a few weeks later I
noticed they had gotten a 3rd collie, and you quessed it! They named
him 'Lassie' also. So they have 3 absolutely gorgeous collies named
Lassie, talk about your common dog names! I quess it makes it easy
to remember who's who.
