What does it take (or is it even possible) to add additional headers to outgoing
mail messages from Outlook and/or Outlook Express?

Searching didn't make it clear if it was possible. I saw the hack to
inetcomm.dll but wonder if there's not a safer route.

Thanks,
Bill Kearney

A better question might be to post what it is you want to do. Then we might
be able to help. If you are asking about the X-no archive, see if this link
helps:

Thought I covered it pretty well...

Add extra headers to outgoing MAIL messages.

I don't want X-No-Archive, don't want Moderation, don't want to do this to NEWS
posts. There are any number of additional X- style headers that can be added.
Which header doesn't make much difference, being able to add headers to outgoing
mail is what I'm after.

Apparently it's not possible to have Outlook/Express do this on it's own.

That conclusion is correct. There is no way for Outlook Express to do that.

Check my headers.

Gents: The question was about adding headers to *MAIL* messages and not
news messages. I posted the link for how to do it news messages. Do either
of you want to try it in a *MAIL* message? <G>

And for the record, it can be done in mail, it's just not as simple, and
"hacking" in the Outbox is not something most users are inclined to want to
even try.

Oh, you can also check the headers in this message.

1 for you today. Didn't even look at it earlier, just thought you'd fallen
in the same trap. <G>

There's a change that shiny thing is a hook, but I'll bite anyway.
There's nothing special about your headers as I see them except for the
rather strange content of the Keywords header. It looks like you intended
those to be additional header lines, but they don't come through that way:

Keywords: headers^MX-Tra-Header1: Here's one^MX-Tra-Header2: and another

Thanks for that. I always suspected they weren't quite right from
other tests I have done.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention.

Like to explain, or post a link?

> Oh, you can also check the headers in this message.

They appear ok in OE, but seems they don't display properly
in other newsreaders. So I'm not sure if there's any point in
adding them if other software can't read them as new lines.

Thanks Jim, it is indeed MAIL that I'm seeking to add headers onto. Not NEWS.

You mean hacking inetcomm.dll? Or is there another way?

That's one way that others have done in the past. Not recommended and
particularly difficult with newer operating systems and Windows File
Protection in those newer systems. But hacking anything is beyond the scope
of this newsgroup although there are abundant resources available to the
determined user.
