Ho hum.

Was informed in the recent service that the downpipes are developing rust
holes. THey were fitted in April 2001
Shame for motad that they come with a 36 month guarantee.

I must admit to being surprised that SS downpipes have degraded so quickly.

Certain it was the S/S pipes that were fitted and not the chrome ones?. I've
never had an S/S pipe do that. Still, could have been a shitty batch.
Good luck to you getting it sorted.

That _is_ handy!

There's lots of grades of stainless, this is obviously a shite one!

Need any help fitting it give us a shout.

Stainless Steels, ferrous alloys that contain a minimum of 12% (1) chromium
for corrosion resistance (high resistance factor 18%). Made of this material
your downpipes should not have corroded thus. SS resists corrosion by
developing an oxidisation layer, it is not inherently non-corrodable, spot
rubbing and high pressure metal/metal contact (2) set up a corrosion
mechanism called Galling.

With reference to the note below do not use stainless fastners on bikes
without applying an appropriate anti-seize compound including shanks running
through aluminium(alloy). Cold welding can occur.

Heat and the presence of chloride ions increases SS corrosion rates,
obviously significant for an exhaust downpipe, but to rust through in 3
years of normal conditions there has been either a very poor selection of SS
grade or Motad have used a batch with flaws (not unknown) either in the
stock or in the tube drawing process. It could be that they got it cheap....

(1) or 10.5% depending on local standards
(2) such as thread contact points and 'twixt washers/bolt heads, alleviated
by using certain greases (3) or using dissimilar SS grades.
(3) I just use copaslip on bike stuff, Rocol do a high temperature metal
free anti-seize paste which is the real McCoy but it only comes in Ł45 tins.
