hi all,

Having sorted my last problem here, thought i would ask again as very
helpful info last time and problem sorted out in no time.

Anyway last problem was (will explain quickly as may be connected to new
problem, not sure):
i now use clara broadband, but still want to send/receive emails using my bt
account. -
turns out i had to change the outgoing (smtp) to the relevant clara one.
works fine now.

So now, when people are sending me emails, i guess i get about 75% of them,
but the rest bounce back to the sender.

any ideas why ?

Regarding previous problem, some people here answered, speculating that i
need to dial-up (as oppose to clara broadband which i use) with my
BTOpenworld Pay As You Go account and check my BTO e-mail, at least every 90
days. i have done this probably 30 days ago, so dont think this is the prob,
and why would i still get some emails and not others. ..and haven't received
a reminder e-mail saying the account is almost up.

any help much appreciated...

...i should probably add that after the first problem was sorted out
(regarding sending emails via BTO using clara), i never had this problem of
emails bouncing back to sender. this has just happened recently.

Any chance you could get one of the people who has tried and
failed to e-mail you to post the resulting bounce message here?

thanks for the reply...
ok, here is the message people recieve when a mail bounces back at their
end:

-------------------------------------------

This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

Your message was not delivered because the destination computer was
not reachable within the allowed queue period. The amount of time
a message is queued before it is returned depends on local configura-
tion parameters.

Most likely there is a network problem that prevented delivery, but
it is also possible that the computer is turned off, or does not
have a mail system running right now.

Your message was not delivered within 4 days.
Host btopenworld.com is not responding.

Well... seems pretty clear that the BTO mail servers are in
trouble. To check this out, dial in to your BTO account and take
a look at the closed (private) newsgroups btinternet.announce and
btinternet.support (possibly also btinternet.whinge).

(Can't tell you myself - I deserted BTO long ago - when it was
still BTi - and only dial in for a few seconds once every couple
of months in order to keep my account alive as a backup ... and
to retain the BTi Inanity web site mentioned in my sig).

Might be an idea also to e-mail a copy of the bounce message to
postm...@btinternet.com and ask him what's going on.

Their mail servers have not been dead at all.

There are a number of people having problems, but that is not the
reason. I have been sending and receiving email every time I have
logged on in the last few days.

And that includes a couple of times when I have entered something
online which has resulted in an email to me, which always arrived
within less than 10 minutes.

Just what the problem is, I have no idea. There is no doubt there *is*
a significant problem.

moongate.btinternet.com
stargate.btinternet.com

are not working STILL. Bt Internet customers can still send mail as its more
than likely a different SMTP server.

I am receiving mail on my btopenworld.com account from external sites ok,
though of course some could be bounced without my being aware of it.
I have received mail via the servers 'niobium' and 'platinum' recently and
when I just tried SMTP connections 'stargate' sent me through to 'hafnium'
and 'moongate' to 'platinum' (and that was from another ISP). Having said
that I tried both again several times and got no response so something isn't
quite as it should be. Presumably 'stargate' and 'moongate' are just load
balancers but they aren't doing a good job if they are connecting to servers
that aren't responding unless they don't have any servers that can respond.

OK, where do you get those from?

All the emails I have received recently have come through servers with
the names of metals, such as cadmium.btinternet.com, or
niobium.btinternet.com

I'm not sure what you mean by the last part, since I had said that I
can both send and receive.

On Fri, 17 Oct 2003 23:28:48 GMT, [Matthew M] mentioned :-

Matt, BTow has about 40 backend mail servers, of which those are two.
If you are specifying cetain specific servers, then you might perhaps
look at changing.

moongate and stargate are load balancers. There are around 14 or so MX
servers behind them which will all appear in headers at some point or
another.
