Fixpack6, Trap000d, and now I cant even boot the rescue disks.........I am running outta patience with this shit

Overview:
I was running warp4 with fixpack 5 installed, rather buggy if you ask
me, crashed at random intervals, so I took the plunge to fixpack 6.
Installed no problem, ran fine for a few days, thought all my problems
were behind me and this morning, it crashed and burned. NP, just a
quick reboot and we'll be back in operation. WRONG! I would get past
the hardware detection, the loading of IBM506 or whatever, load the
cdrom filesystem, and a few other drivers........and just before the
blue screen, trap000d.
OK, so I'll boot with the emergency disks and cler things up with a
chkdsk and we'll be flying...........WRONG! Agan, same
spot......trap000d. Now I'm panicking. I try restoring form past
system archives, try resetting the screen to VGA, all to no avail. It
comes up with an internal processing error blah blah blah.
OK, Fine, Whatever.......I'll reinstall the whole fucking system
then.........WRONG! The install disks and cdrom die about the same
point. I get into the 3rd disk, and it dies, with a trap000d but some
of the numbers are a little different (I will upload all the numbers
if it is necessary, but then the post would be so freaking long, I
figured most would pass it up because of it.
So, here is my question, is it possible that it is a hardware problem,
as in something smoked somwhere and for some reason OS/2 is more
sensative than Windows 95? (I am in windows now to write this, I have
boot manager installed). Any and all help will be appreciated, a
hardware list follows:
Intel 133 pentuim, VX chipset, 80 Meg RAM, syquest syjet PP, S3 Virge
video card, 2 WD hard drives.

Sounds like what happened to me except i never got up once
without the trap000d did u try ALT F1 then boot to command
prompt with original config.sys. my problem was in my S3 968
video drivers. if i reinstalled fp5 everything was fine
again. emailed Number Nine Tech Support and they said to try
newer drivers on S3.com.

Drivers might be different. The newer drivers Dated 6/97 i

Thanks Dave, but I should explain a little better......When I say that
the system would crash under fixpack 5, i mean like perhaps once every
3 or 4 days,....I could boot no problem, never saw any trap messages,
nothing. I have a Syquest and wanted better removable support, as
well as thinking perhaps the crashing problems would subside. I
installed the fixpack no problem, ran it for 12 hours or so and was
really excited, thought everything was ok. Then, I reboot and
nothing....nothing but traps. I tried resetting to VGA via Alt-F1 and
all that, and when that failed, finally decided to reinstall from the
CD. It hangs with a trap 000d. When i first installed warp, I didnt
have this problem. Now I do.....what could have changed. I have the
same hardware.

I am one step away from wiping the drive and installing NT. I cant
take this shit anymore........I have been on board with OS/2 since
2.11, but it has always been one thing after another, but I adjusted
my way of doing things to accomidate OS/2. If this isn't resolved
with little or no cost by this weekend, OS/2 is a gonner. I need to
get some damn work done, not constantly changing configurations,
reinstalling, modifying, waiting for a fixpack, converting word 97
documents so I can edit them later in OS/2, all that is about to end.

Sorry Dave, I am not pointing this at you, but at the boneheads at
IBM. Thanks for the suggestions, but I have tried everything short of
a new computer to try it on. I got news for the dinks at IBM, but
thats where I draw the line......

compared to OS/2.....save it. I need to get some damn work done, I
dont have the money to hire a full-time system admin for my home
computer for christ sakes. It really shouldnt be that complicated.

Partition corruption? Hardware failure? maybe...
Did you wipe the parition ( or at least the OS/2 dir before
you reinstalled? )

If you need your computer for work so badly, then why did you mess with
what worked already? I understand the want to get updates, but
if you have so much trouble, why bother?
Also, if you really must use Word 97 for your work, then get rid
of OS/2. I love OS/2 , but you've got to run what makes you
productive.

That was my question.........I dont know, and no I didn't wipe the
partition, I was trying a clean install from the CD as the lasst
resort, and it still crapped out. Now, it installed before, so the
only possiblity that I see is that something hardware related went
south, cause it was working fine before with the hardware I had
installed.

Well, Lotus SmartSuite was going to solve that problem, I had the beta
and it was doing what I needed it too......

It sounds like it is failing at video driver load.
Do you have a DOS utility for testing your video card thoroughly?
Do you have another video card that you can try?
You might try pulling all adaptor cards (except video), then if it works,
add cards one at a time until it fails.

I think I have found the culprit, how much I can save is yet to be
determined but it has to do with dspres.dll, even once I FINALLY got to
the os/2 desktop I tried a service removal and is stopped at that file
with the restore. All I can say is I am not putting fixpack 6 on this
thing once I get it back.
as far as hardware it is the same hardware that has been running os/2
for over a year, and I have been running it since 1992, this is without
a doubt one of the worst fixpacks I have seen to date.

I am not yelling at you Jim, I am just stumped and frustrated that one
day I can boot no problem, the next day I am screwed and as far as i
can tell, it must be a hardware problem along the linds of a
motherboard or some other part that I refuse to replace my whole
system peice by peice to run warp4. I have given enough time and
effort to get it running......no more. I dont have time for this
anymore, I have to go with what works. It is a sad day for me. I
liken it to finding out your wife has been cheating on you and is
leaving, and the only way to keep her is to devote ALL your resources,
including resources you can't afford. Perhaps I need to take up bank
robbing to support my Warp habit......can you imagine that headline
"The robber said he was supporting a $500 a week habit in computer
parts"

Presuming you have tried <Alt F1> to a command prompt,
Have you also tried <Alt-F1> to the Maintenance Desktop?
- that one will also complete any hung installation, AND let you
re-install (from the CD, not just from possibly-corrupted HDD)
the VGA drivers.
I have had to do that on one of the PC's was upgrading.
Otherwise, FP6 is the best yet - for me!

Can you boot DOS? WIN-something? At least get a BIOS POST screen?
If so, more likely trashed files than hardware (although WIN-95 will run
- sometimes - with known-bad DRAM).
Can you re-create the install disks from CD (on another PC?).
Have you reset your BIOS to defaults and re-configured?
Mind you - I doubt OS/2 is at sole fault - but........

I have tried everything, including rebooting from maint. disks, which
should not care one bit about what is on the Hard Drive, and nada,
nothing. I have also tried creating fresh install disks from the CD,
again, nothing. I have just about everything i can diabled, disabled.
I guess its time to pack it in with os/2. I have a fairly recent
backup of my paritions, I guess i will try to reinstall if I get a new
computer later this year, but for now, its gonna get wiped.....I need
the space.

I had a problem like this over a year ago with plain Warp 4. It cropped up
after doing some programming changes and testing that caused the system
to crash. Just like you, I couldn't access the system at all.
I tried MSDOS, PCDOS and couldn't even get at the partition table with fdisk
until finally I rooted out an old copy of Novell Dos 7 and booted from floppies.
I was able to run fdisk from there and decided to wipe out one partition at a
time (I had backups). After first wiping out my C: partition (Dos), I tried a
reboot and lo and behold everything was suddenly functional.
