I have made a series of controls for the designer, but I cant seem to find
where I specify the cool icon for the toolbox.

Have you followed the steps described in the following articles?

http://www.intelprog.com/articles/index.html

and

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpguide/htm
l/cpconclassvscomponentvscontrol.asp

So, your control works in the Toolbox, but shows the cogwheel instead?

This is provided "AS IS", with no warranties, and confers no rights.

That is correct. My control works but displays the cogwheel. How can I
change that cogwheel to my own icon??

Create a bitmap icon and name it as the full name of your control. For
example:
XYZCompany.Forms.Controls.MyControl.bmp.
If you use the batch file to compile the design-time version, add the
following line to it:
/res:XYZCompany.Forms.Controls.MyControl.bmp

Just a question, but what size bitmap should you create. I got it to not
use the cogwheel, but can't really make out what is there. It looks
something like my icon with a '!' next to it
