You might give a clue what sound chip and modules you are using (kernel
version or Alsa?).
On my laptop using commercial or free OSS, or Alsa ymfpci (Yamaha) modules
sound would break up or repeat until I disabled PnP BIOS support in CMOS
setup. Something having to do with the shared irq.

Can you play mp3's thru some other player? If so it might be that you
somehow turned on some output plugin for xmms (take a close look at
the voice removal one).
