So, I rented the _Earthian_ tapes "Beginning of the End", "Fallen Angel", and
"Angelic Destroyer"... My friend has "BotE", but he's convinced it's not the
start of the series, as it seems to start in the middle of the plot and has
flashbacks to stuff that has happened previously (so he says; I haven't seen it
yet).
So, what IS the beginning of the _Earthian_ series, and how long is it?
Thanks!

As I understand it, there are only 4 OAVs (the last of which isn't out yet).
The problem seems to be that a lot of stuff is only explained in the manga
(hence that huge plot gap between parts 2 and 3). (That's AFAIK, BTW. Anyone
who knows more about the series should feel free to correct me.)

It's one of those *aggravating* series that presupposes the viewer has the
manga memorized. It's especially frustrating in this case, because they
seem to have animated the most boring stories and left out all the
fireworks at the end. IIRC (and I haven't read the manga, just synopses),
the first two OAVs are expanded chapters, where Chihaya does his thing of
latching on to a stray Earthian and Kagetsuya gets annoyed. The third
story, which was broken up into OAVs three and four for North American
release, takes place *after* the manga, which must confuse the hell out of
viewers who don't know the story.
What really drives you loony is that they have all sorts of references to
stuff that isn't shown on screen but took place in the manga. Major,
major plot points. And they do this ALL THE TIME, mostly in the second
and third shows.
After all this, I still enjoy the show tremendously, as the artstyle and
direction are lovely, but do see if you can look up some links on AnimeWeb
Turnpike, because you'll be going "huh?" all the time if you don't.

Earthian is three episodes long, but it's being released as four (the
last ep is twice as long so they're dividing it into two parts...). I

Oh yeah, there is that. Kagetsuya really should coach Chihaya in some of
that hand to hand he's so good at. (No hentai meaning intended).

I like the dub quite a lot, especially the third episode. Chihaya seems a
bit overplayed at times, and Kagetsuya can come off as harsher than the
original does, but they're all quite good overall. I especially like the
Aya (I haven't heard her original voice).
SPOILERS!
SPOILERS!:
By the way, the angel at the opening of 3 with long, straight, white hair
is Raphael, and the blond with frilly curls is Michael (please try not to
choke too hard). Yes, they are both archangels. Raphael took over from
Michael and decided the Earthians were a negative race so it was time for
them to go blooey. As for why Michael was in the clink (?), if you find
out, please tell me. I believe *Kagetsuya* was in jail for a while, but
that obviously wasn't him in that shot.
(Oh, if they'd only animated the scene Chihaya tears a feather from his
wing to give to his beloved Kagetsuya when they parted...! *sniff*)
And did you know Chihaya is Michael's adopted son?! You'd NEVER guess
that one from the anime--also Kagetsuya's Raphael's protege, and Chihaya
graduated first in his class from Angel Academy, or whatever it was.

Yeah! But it was so short and then they got mad at each other. : ( I
really, really, REALLY wish they'd animated the story where Kagetsuya and
Chihaya confess their feelings and make love for the first time, because
it sounds like a dynamite storyline. And I'm not just saying this for
drooling fangirl reasons. Their forbidden love affair intertwines with
all the Eden-Earth warfare stuff that's alluded to at the beginning of the
third video.
And from what I've heard second-hand about the manga storyline, Kagetsuya
and Chihaya are VERY much in love--a real starcrossed-lovers, Romeo and
Juliet scenario without the dying. But lots of angst! But they live
happily ever after. *niko*
It's interesting in the anime to watch their progression as a couple,
bickering constantly, but getting closer and more protective of each other
as the show continues. I particularly love the ending of 2...so romantic.

Bishonen no Miko's site is especially good--it takes a long time to load
up with Netscape, but the info and pics are terrific. Also Jen's Chihaya
website has loads of info on the end of the manga. I think Monica has an
Earthian page as well, as does Thera.
Michael was in the clink for helping Chihaya and Kagetsuya escape when they
were put on trial for having a homosexual affair. This part hasn't appeared
in the manga as of yet, nor in the anime.

The website Haruka mentioned has fan translations of the manga. (Insert
groveling apology for forgetting to recommend this site earlier. It's
very good). It hasn't been officially released here, and AFAIK there are
no plans for it to be. If anyone knows differently, I'd be very eager to

Kouga Yun (family name first). I'm not sure how you'd get a copy.
Special order from Kinokuniya or something,I guess.

"*Right!* Turn RIGHT!" Great peel the paint off the walls voice. I feel
sorry for poor Miyagi, though. Not only is he an angel, he's a saint to

Okay, so maybe it's just me. But I always picture the Archangel Michael
as a stern, swashbuckling type, so seeing him with bows in his hair took
me by surprise. I kind of thought he should look like Raphael, but hey,
that's just me. I doubt the audience is supposed to put much thought into
this sort of thing.
Okay, so the Eden Michael isn't *really* the same Michael as in Western
monotheistic tradition, but I assume there are supposed to be broad
parallels.

Thanks! That puts a spin on things I wasn't expecting. *ponders* Wow.
: So, they're affair is forbidden becasue they're both guys? I thought it might
: be for another reason; I wasn;t sure...
Apparently homosexuality is the Great Sin of Eden (does this apply to
women as well, I wonder?). This does not seem to stop the angels from
having rather torrid romantic friendships, but consummating the
relationship is Right Out. As is sleeping with humans. A bunch of
Lucifers eloped with some Earthians, and produced angel-human hybrids, the
so-called "black angels". Seraphim's daughter(!) is one of these. I
wonder if she's the woman we see with Taki in that one still in "Angelic
Destroyer". I have no idea who she's supposed to be. I assume the kids
that C and K rescue at the beginning are mixed species. I'm also guessing
that Elvira is a human involved with the angels, but I have no idea.
Anyway, Chihaya and Kagetsuya having a sexual relationship is the Scandal
of the Millennium in Eden. They end up defecting to Earth when the dust
settles, and then I guess the whole Messiah affair starts.
Speaking of which, my fiance, who's also seen the show, has a rather
darker view of the K/C romance than I do. He feels that Chihaya is
basically looking for Mr. Goodbar, in that he's relentlessly searching for
answers to his identity and latches rather haphazardly onto anyone he
thinks might be able to help him. James feels this a) is not doing his
existing relationship a whole lot of good and b) that Chihaya is probably
going to wind up dead the way things are going; not necessarily with
Messiah in particular, but C's attitude in general. He also finds K/C
relationship more coercive than loving, and doesn't like the power
imbalance between them that he feels exists.
Me, I'm an incurable romantic, and think they'll work things out. Also, a
lot of the dominant/submissive stuff is just endemic to the genre Kouga's
writing in.

Haruka
Michael and Raphael have had their own little romance for awhile, however
Raphael has decided to marry.
Michael will never marry as he's in love with a woman wh's been dead for
several years, his own sister Lucifer. Also, they had had a child together
many years ago, and guess who the child is.... Kagetsuya! (his father,
Prince Sakura, adopted him)
Seraphim's daughter is Elvira. The woman that died with Taki was not her,
but was his girlfriend (can't remember the name) they died to save earth
from destruction when Raphael gave the order to destroy it (right after he
became the head archangel)
I assume the kids
>that C and K rescue at the beginning are mixed species. I'm also guessing
>that Elvira is a human involved with the angels, but I have no idea.
The children they saved were Elvira's son and daughter. Her father was
Seraphim.
Also, it was found out later, that Seraphim was Chihaya's natural father....
>Anyway, Chihaya and Kagetsuya having a sexual relationship is the Scandal
>of the Millennium in Eden. They end up defecting to Earth when the dust
>settles, and then I guess the whole Messiah affair starts.
Michael helps Chihaya escape. Chihaya tears off one of his wings for
Michael to give to Kagetsuya. I guess he gets it back in time for messiah
to rip it off again, but at least this can relieve you to know it goes back
on....
There's a big battle between The angels of Earth and the angels of Eden.
Taki dies in this, and, I'm not sure, but I think Eden and earth are cut off
from each other. I know the Earthside angels help destroy the
space/teleportation station, (named after one of the archangels)

No, I don't think so. I just hadn't expected Michael to take such a
direct hand in his son(s)' getaway.
So, if Kagetsuya's Michael's (unacknowledged?) biological son, and
Chihaya's his adopted (legal?) son, are the two stepbrothers? My brain

: >produced angel-human hybrids, the so-called "black angels".
: Is that what's up with Chihaya? The reason he has black wings, etc? Or do we

I don't *think* we ever find out (Michiru-san, do you know?). Kagetsuya
refers to Chihaya as a "mutant", to his face, at their first appearance in
the manga. I believe it's a mystery all through the story as to why
Chihaya is black winged. I do know he's the only healthy angel to have
black wings, and I think the only one born that way.
NB: Having black wings is NOT the same as being a "black angel". The
first OAV confuses things by having Chihaya refer to himself as a black
angel, meaning he has black wings. This isn't just a dub blooper, BTW,
the original has him saying kuroi tenshi or kuro no tenshi, or whatever
the phrase is. Nevertheless, Chihaya is not a black angel by strict
definition, in that he is a full-blooded angel. I think! Is there a plot
twist I'm not aware of where he's part human?
: >I'm also guessing that Elvira is a human involved with the
: >angels, but I have no idea.
: Elvira?
You probably figured it out by now. Elvira pulls up in a pickup truck in
OAV three as the lab complex explodes, and our heroes conveniently yell
"Elvira!", just so we know her name. And I was wrong in the above
section: she's the daughter of Seraphim and a human woman, therefore a
"black angel". And Chihaya's half-sister.
: >Speaking of which, my fiance, who's also seen the show, has
: >a rather darker view of the K/C romance than I do. He feels

: I can seee that- but does that mean his relationship woth Kagetsuya is invalid?
No. Neither of us feels that way.
It's just that Chihaya seems obsessive about finding someone, *anyone*
with black wings, and takes some pretty stupid chances in doing so. He
shows his wings at the drop of a hat to total strangers! Especially iffy,
since Eden has a "three strikes you're out" policy about wing-revealing.
Chihaya's just too obsessed with the wing thing to be healthy. He'll blow
his cover, confide in people off the street, run into burning buildings;
*anything* to find out more about black wings or angels who might have
them. This is especially hazardous given his lack of fighting ability.
"One day he's going to walk into something he can't handle, and
Kagetsuya's not going to be around," quoth James.
: >He also finds K/C relationship more coercive than loving,
: Why?
I'm trying to pin him down on this. : ) It seems that Kagetsuya is, and
wants to be, the one in charge all the time, and wants to have things his
way. Kind of a control freak. He's awfully bossy with Chihaya, when
they're supposed to be equals. James feels Chihaya may need more of a
father or mentor figure than a lover, and Kagetsuya kind of-sort of doing
both is problematic. He also believes that Kagetsuya doesn't listen to
Chihaya or validate his feelings, and that Kagetsuya plays power games to
get his way.
I've pointed out that part of this *may* be due to the way the English
actors interpret the roles. Kagetsuya seems nastier and Chihaya more of a
pushover in that version than from what I can tell of the Japanese
version. But I could be biased. I should note that I also quite like the
English Kagetsuya, in one or two places better than Inoue Kazuhiko (and
I'm a big Inoue fan).
: I don't think a relationship between two people of differing power is
: necessarily ABOUT power, or wrong,. or doomed to failure.
No...but Kagetsuya can be awfully hardnosed. And they *are* supposed to
be equal partners, but Kagetsuya yells at Chihaya an awful lot.
Of course, as *I* point out, when push comes to shove, Kagetsuya is ALWAYS
there for Chihaya. And that's what really counts. : )
We need to see more of their relationship, dammit. The anime just doesn't
show enough. *pout*

*Man* this is a soap opera. The anime really does do all the least
interesting stuff. *pout*
So are Kagetsuya and Chihaya the recognized children of Michael and
Seraphim respectively, or is this all a Big Dark Secret that just causes
more angst all around when it's revealed?
I need to sit down and map out a family tree of all this. I wonder if
incest is as big a deal as homosexuality is on Eden, or if it's perfectly
common for angels to sleep with their own sisters, adoptive-father's
biological sons, or what have you.
: >Also, it was found out later, that Seraphim was Chihaya's

: Oh! And that's why he has black wings!! HE's a half breed, or quater breed,

I don't believe it's as simple as that, though I could be wrong. AFAIK,
Chihaya's wings are the only naturally black wings in all Eden. I don't
think the hybrids are literally black-winged (do they have wings at all?
I don't know).
No one knows why his wings are black. I read that some angels were going
to take some sort of biological samples from Chihaya one morning, when
they walked in and found Kagetsuya had erm, taken some samples of his
own...anyway, they threw a fit and K and C landed in jail. There was a
big trial, and they asked Kagetsuya (under oath?) if he'd had a sexual
relationship with Chihaya. He said yes, because he didn't want to lie
about his love. Then they asked Chihaya if he'd slept with Kagetsuya, and
*he* said no, because he was trying to protect his lover. And Kagetsuya
started crying! Poor baby. I would LOVE to see some pics from this
section. I've only read synopses of it. Argh.
I refuse to make coy political references at this point. K and C are far
more admirable personally. Not to mention much cuter.

Well, if it's not a big deal, then it's technically not incest. I'm serious.
Incest is defined as: "sex between persons so closely related that they are
forbidden by law to marry".
So, for example, in ancient Egypt, it was perfectly legal for bothers and
sisters to marry. So sex between a brother and a sister would not be incest.
