Amazingly, episode 1 has already been fansubbed.
Maybe the schedule I read was wrong?
In which case, perhaps the Snow Fairy Sugar
summer specials will be on Aug 9 and 10.

This suggests a simpler explanation than time travel.

It's both scary and discouraging how many of the shows in your lists are
"me-too", "more-of-the-same" and "sequelitis" series...
What worries me is that it looks like the anime industry has realized that
the lucrative US market is now wide-open, and they are pumping out as many
clones of currently successful series as they can in order to fill the
demand before this latest "fad" cools off.
Maybe the business model is that of then video game industry - that the core
market outgrows the product in a few years but there is always a new
generation coming up who don't realize what is "new and hot" is really old
and derivative.
I was looking through the July 2003 issue of Bandai Video's "Beat"
ad-magazine that came with my latest order from CD Japan. At least one of
the series listed below are already being "pumped" for video release -
"Popotan". Let's look at the way it is being pushed : there is a front cover
and two page spread on pages 4 & 5 - "Ano dai ninki PC game" / "That super
popular PC game", now an anime. Hmmm - why should that inspire me to think
that this will be anything more than just another "cute girl doing stupid
things" series?
Pages 2 & 3 are more "Digiko" crap. Geeze - this was marginally "cute" when
it was the original TV advertisements back in 1997 - but to still be putting
out this crap is astonishing.
Pages 6 & 7 are "Saint Seya" derivatives - ugh - this stuff was out of date
when it first came out years ago. It's less relevant and less original
today.
Pages 8 & 9 are more "Mazingaiser" - again - please "let the dead past bury
its dead".
Pages 10 & 11 are "Zambots" "memorial" - the only memorial here is to the
poor taste of youth. (Carl Sagan once wrote how he went back some 20 or so
years later to re-read one of his favorite sci-fi novels from the 1940's,
and how he couldn't believe that it was the same story once he finished
re-reading it because it was so much more mediocre than how he remembered
it. )
Page 12 has ads for the re-releases of "Saint Tail" and "Pastel Yumi". In
the case of "Tail" this continues the trend of re-releasing anime in Japan
after their release in the US. "Yumi" should be "required viewing" for
everyone who thought that "Fancy Lala" was original.
Page 13 has an ad for the third OAV in the "Yukikaze" series of super
fighter aircraft wet dreams. This one is featuring a pilot named "Tom Jon"
who, from the illo, appears to be a token Amerindian, long pigtails and all.
Page 14 lists all the current Bandai releases, and page 15 lists their
releases for the next few months. The only two series from the lists that I
am currently buying are Torimino's wonderfully tongue-in-cheek "King Gainer"
and, despite it's upcoming R1 release, "Witch Hunter Robin". What really
ticks me off is that "Atashi'n chi" is only being released as a VHS video!!!
I hope that they eventually do a DVD box release. ( Who do they think is
buying it - only housewives? )
( BTW - I received an email notice from CD Japan the other day for a new CD
re-releasing the songs from "Dr. Slump". Can I hope or dream that a DVD
re-release is coming? I've only seen the late 90's version, but I'd be
willing to buy the original version sight-unseen in a flash. )
On the back page is an ad for a new steam-punk OAV called, appropriately
enough, "Steam Boy". Sheesh - real original, nee? From the looks of it, and
the pretentious prose, it appears to be yet another serious, 19th
century-style alternate world fantasy. Why should we want to watch yet
another moody 13 year old cast in a take-off on a bad Jules Verne novel?
This looks like it will be a year in which I won't be spending anywhere near
as much money on anime as in the past. Let's hope that the producers start
to see some diminishing returns on the "export quality" clones that they are
currently producing and "original" becomes the "new black" once again.

The preview episode (DVD) with

Panyo Panyo was a totally new take;
even if it was for pre-schoolers, it was by
no means derivative of the earlier works.
DigiCharat-Nyo is also different in that it is clearly
aimed at a much younger audience than the original
series. It is also far more coherent and less edgy than
the short pieces. For example, while Hikaru's parents
are flaky, they are not sociopathic monsters.

And something "Zoids"; I don't know if it's a new season,
or just a reshowing. Ai Yori Aoshi and Mahoromatic seem
to be getting encore pressentations this fall.

I would like to see Pastel Yumi. And also the rest of the
Magical Girl Foursome. Anyone who thinks Lala
was original didn't watch the interview segments
on the DVD; "to do it over without the mistakes"
is not a philosophy of originality.

Yeah, they should rip off Heinlein instead:
_Space Cadet_
_Have Spacesuit, Will Travel_
_Rolling Stones_
_Citizen of the Galaxy_
_Starman Jones_
_Rocket Ship Galileo_
Even _Podkayne of Mars_, if they have the cojones
to make it a cautionary tale and horror story.

My spending is down as well; now that I can't
possibly buy it all, I have to decide which is the
"good stuff" -- and there are so few series I want
to watch several times.

Speaking of which (and obliquely offering a cautionary note), does
anyone have the rights to the _Starship Troopers_ anime nowadays?

Well, it's far more likely that they'd stay true to the story nowadays
than they would have twenty years ago... (And, yes, that would be an
excellent anime if it was done right. I wouldn't give it to AIC or
Sunrise, as those two studios are better at action stories than at this
sort of story. Hmmmmm... Who *would* be a good studio for this?)

I mostly just went through the lists of all forthcoming anime
and only ignored the titels that didn't interest me at all.
-Galen
Gonzo - they would do it the way that Heinlein would have liked it in his
later years. ( It's very minor Heinlein, so give it to a minor studio...
<g> )
Dave Baranyi
IMHO Gonzo has raised the level of their writing and visual artistry
this year. "Last Exile" and "GadGuard" are both big steps forward
for them, and I've heard pretty good things about "Kaleido Star".
- dbm
Kaleido Star is visually appealing... as for writing,
Stellvia of the Universe is a similar story written
much better.

Well, the character designs are nice. And it's not impossible
for a bishoujo game to get turned into a good TV series, see
"Comic Party".
Just very unusual.

I recall reading in rec.arts.manga that the manga becomes very, very
dark after starting off cute. So, could be very interesting.

Maybe. The fact that one of the two girls on the front page of
the web site is wearing a maid costume is discouraging, however.

Might be good, since the comic parts of "FMP" are the best parts.

Bleh.

Could be OK. I recently rented the original 3 "Pretty Samy"
OAVs, and I thought the 1st two were funnier than the 1st two
"Komugi-chan" episodes, however.

Agreed - especially since the characters will have aged
and (hopefully) grown.

Started out good, but seems not to have moved forward much from
the 1st few episodes.

Episode 1 was bad beyond my wildest expectations. So far -
worse than "Mouse" or "Gravion".

That 1st episode was fun, wasn't it? Kasumin has a slight
worldliness that Comet-san (for example) doesn't.

Starts off strong, but each added pint-sized Norse god increases
the strains on credulity. Mayura also needs some character
development Real Soon Now.

Somehow I never got into this one. Something about the "Phantom

No more of that little fairy's freaky dance, thanks.

Bleh.
My favorites so far of shows that started in 2003:
o "Wolf's Rain"
o "Last Exile"
o "GadGuard"
o "Scrapped Princess"
o "Ultra Maniac" still has promise.
Haven't seen any "Kaleido Star", but the screen-shots look cute.
I haven't seen any "Ghost in the Shell: SAC" either.
I'd like to see more "Wandaba Style".
Any idea what this is?
http://comics-news.shueisha.co.jp/common/tenshimitai/
It started 5 July.
This:
http://www.ufotable.com/cosmos/
looks like a Walkurie clone, but maybe without the annoying
chibi-Walkurie herself. It also started 5 July.
Does anybody know anything about "Vie Durant"? I've never been
able to access its web site, http://www.animate.tv/viedurant/.
It starts 15 July.
If anybody feels like subbing an older series, I'd be humbly
thankful to see more of "Siawase Apartment's Okojo-san". I
wouldn't object to more "Comet-san", either.
Looking through the above, it seems I'm more interested in stuff
coming out in Region 1 than in new stuff being broadcast this
summer.

The artwork on the front page suggest to me
that it's targeted at a younger group than Walkurie was.

More Comet would be great; she only just
learned that the prince may in fact be needing
help, and should be found instead of just looked for
once a monsth.

The first episode's subbed already, so someone on broadband can probably
tell what it's like ^_^ I've seen the pictures of the relevant manga
sections - suffice to say...eeew.

According to Natsume Maya today, it begins broadcast on September 1st.
Already licensed, of course.

I got up to Episode 11 after momentarily thinking I really liked it. But
now...I'm not sure. It's Harry Potter in space, there's not much else to
say about it I didn't think, and I have a feeling that it's going to lose
the school dynamic that I liked in favour of some sort of space war with
giant robots, so...meh. And most of Shima's friends are bloody annoying - I
like the love interest and the girl who flunked out before, and that's about
it.
> > Ragnorak 14 -- Jul 5

She's not going to get it, I don't think. She's the slapstick relief. At
least she's stopped getting kidnapped so frequently. And I did enjoy her
bit with Freyr on the Viking ship in episode...10, I think it was ("Fire the
lasers! Pya pya pya!" "...there are no lasers.")
Loki is definitely the focus, and I suspect the anime is about to go full
out on the plot revelations - Kinoshita Sakura has FINALLY explained the
story behind Heimdall's eye in the manga this month, so I would suspect
something like
Yet more gods get introduced of various shapes and sizes, we're going to get
the whole Nordic pantheon eventually. I do like the latest addition to the
story as of the above episode, though ^_^

It's very repetitive, but kinda fun. Apparently Episode 13 featured *gasp*
some plot development!
Also - Harada Risa must die. Now. Painfully. VERY painfully.

Agreed on all counts, though I have a weakness for MaLoki despite being
nowhere near as good as the above. I also greatly enjoyed Mahou Tsukai ni
blahdeblahdeblah.
> I haven't seen any "Ghost in the Shell: SAC" either.
I gave up after one episode of GitS, and had no real intention of watching
much of it anyway. Despite the beautiful music (I'm in the minority I know,
but I find it much more "listenable" on it's own than Wolf's Rain
(especially since all the good music seemed not to make it onto the
soundtrack, and Stray is a guilty pleasure ^_^;)) and fantastic animation,
everyone was just so boring...and when you like the talking tanks more than
the "human" characters you're in trouble.

I think it's a drama of some kind (well, the words "TENSHI MITAI DRAMA!" in
the top left give this impression ^_^;). It's called "Tenshi Mitai -
Girlfriends" (I know Tenshi Mitai has something to do with seeing angels,
but my complete lack of grammatical knowledge fails me), and is written by
Yamashita...someone.

Same company, so the character similarities wouldn't be surprising.

Web anime, the brainchild of Koyasu Takehito (he of the frightening teeth,
booming voice and co-creating of Weiss Kreuz). As far as I can remember,
it's something to do with vampires and the end of the world.
