Nice guys that turn badass when confronted by the demons of their
past.

Competent female characters.

For that matter, competent male characters.

And of course, cute girls with glasses(did I say that already?)

In Japanese, ee (or eh) means yes :)

I agree.

Of course in anime a cute guy is one who
looks like a girl. So in the end, all of us like to see
cute girls :)

Another thing we must like to see is rain falling.

Or a person in a kimono, with his/her hair moving
in the wind, and sakura petals falling in the BG.

Finally something we can agree on.

I like Celebhrive's response... I too just watch it because it's animated.
But if I have to identify some preferences...

> Cute eccentric girls

Tired of them... How about smart, sophisticated, and sexy, without the
stereotypical scientist-with-glasses look? Oh... and over 20 for a change!

> Martial Arts

To a degree...

> Eichi Humor

Used sparingly is when this humour works best.

> Funny Faces

Sparingly...

> Night time city backgrounds

Especially with the 200 storey super structures of the future!

> Magic
> Demons
> Far off villages with castles

Tired of these...

> Light hearted humor
> Bizzare humor

I like bizarre humour better...

I'll add on...

Mecha

Mecha with REALLY COOL transformation scenes

Battle armour

Battle armour with REALLY COOL transformation scenes! ^_^

Humanity under attack and fighting for its very survival again!

Huge spaceships exploring the final frontier that give the feel of romance
of space-travel (i.e. Arcadia in Captain Harlock) as opposed to more recent
ships that seem like Club Med in space. (i.e. Sol Bianca)

SciFi Imagery... ex: Floating Cities, Space Stations, Underwater Cities, Two
Moons in the Sky..etc...

Battle Cries (gotta have the characters scream a lot with emotion! ex:
Getter Robo!)

and...

Male and Female characters that once... just once... understand each other
and are straight-forward with their feelings... that'd be cool.

The final icing on the cake (imho) for me would be...

1)Very well animated and...
2)a hard rocking soundtrack

More or less,
Kyle

PS... Oh yeah... and a well-written story with superb characterizations and
voice-acting... but we all want that! :P

As many as there are people, Catherine.

Once you really *_understand_* that, you can go on to the next stage in
understanding people - talking with both Blade and David Watson, in
person, at the same time...

What? What do I like to see in anime? Well, besides a well-written
story (I guess I'm your kind of weirdo), I like seeing cute girls
wearing glasses. Mind you, I like seeing cute women wearing glasses
even more.

He said "cute girls" - you're being redundant... ^_^

Competent characters? Is that *_allowed_*???

I still think you're being redundant there...

I'm cool with cute women wearing glasses--especially if they're also built
like a brick shipyard. dB) Taeko from Ai Yori Aoshi and Moe Yagisawa from
G-taste (and it's too early in the morning for me to recall any more), I
salute you.

Actual chracterization.

A lack of 'look we're wacky' one note chracters.

Also, I enjoy shorter series with tighter plots nowadays. I am hoping Princess
Tutu is short.

Oh come on! If lack of characterisation, one note characters and long,
rambling series that never end are good enough for Hollywood, why isn't it
good enough for anime? :-P

(P.S. I am being facetious)

Being serious for a moment, I don't like that sort of thing in Hollywood
either.
