You've got Roll.EXE under favorite female character too. Did you mean that?
( We both put Chii under "Favorite non-Human" character.)

This one was hard! Lots more good female characters this year.

There weren't that many OAV's in 2002. It's almost a trivia question
nowadays.

Better than "off hand" - (L) - I've got the two box sets - there were 43
episodes. The box sets also have a bunch of extra materials.

Least favourite:

"Kaze wo Tsukinikete" or whatever it's called, "Rockman.EXE"

The award for "Most Baffling Plot" goes unofficially to Weiss Kreuz Gluhen -
for leaping in without any explanation and assuming everyone's seen the
original , never seeming to actually give the main characters names or
describing what they're doing - and all this HAVING CHANGED THE CHARACTER
DESIGNS SO NO-ONE KNOWS WHO ANYONE IS ANYWAY!

Here's to 2003 - I'm already looking forward to "Wolf's Rain", the "Mahou
Tsukai ni..." thingymajigum, and possibly "Melody of Oblivion" or whatever
that new Gainax thing is called.

It was hard to pick out three this year, I'd say there
were 7 to 9 really good shows this year. Any one of yours
could knock "Abenobashi" off my "favorite three" list
depending upon how they end.

> Least favourite:

Has somebody been forcing you to watch multiple episodes of this
show, at an anime club for instance? I detect the righteous anger
of the injured underlying your post.

Oh come on - it's not NEARLY as bad as "Chojushin Gravion"!

She really does add a lot to the first story arc.

Really? Through 20 episodes Mishima seems like a cypher to me.

Ack - I forgot about him! He definitely replaces Shirochenheim in

It's amazing how much worse "Naruto"'s OP is than its ED.

In which ep is this? Being Japanese-challenged I generally have
trouble identifying the names of non-OP, non-ED anime songs.

That's about the point that the series really starts to get good too. Stick
with it, it's worth the wait.

Good call on these. I'm especially impressed with King Gainer's distinctive
look, which seems more American to me in places than Japanese. And that's a
nice change of pace from all these look-alike, spikey-haired anime
characters you could pretty much interchange with one another without it
making a real difference.

The fansubbers who were doing "Comet-san" (and other series)
have put everything else on hold to do "Princess Tutu", on which
they've made fast progress.

IIRC from the "Preview" interview show, "King Gainer" was the first
production out of the new Universal Studios Japan ( in Osaka ), so maybe the
animators there were chosen with some influence from Universal in the US.

FLCL was released between 2000 and 2001 in Japan. I'm not sure of the
release dates in N.A. .

Wow, you're fast - I thought that "Macross Zero" was released only a couple
of weeks ago.

Thanks for the comments -

Dear Mr. Barnyard,

Please learn to properly snip posts you reply to, as it is unnecessary to
quote an entire 160 line post for a 2 line reply.

Thanks.

Maybe the evil twin would enjoy "Chojushin Gravion" then...

I just got it and was really impressed. After shite like Macross 7, it
was a real treat.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Mew Mew.

Nothing? Except for the fact that it is a piece of drek. Then again, I tend to
like originality unless you did something interesting with the concept. And
I've seen so much cute that you can't just say LOOK it's CUTE and expect me to
fall over myself.

Here follows a tale of woe.

I joined a fansubbing group back in October. They gave me nothing to do for
a couple of weeks. Then they decided to stick me on Rockman. The group had
pretended not to be fansubbing it, and were secretly doing so to piss off
their rival group (who they had split from previously). I had to watch 16
episodes of the sodding thing before I could start editing the scripts. As
no-one else wanted to do it, I ended up editing about 10 episodes of it
(having to watch it, then repeatedly listen to bits to see if I could
understand any of the Japanese (no, I couldn't) to undo the sometimes
mangled translation. Then the guy in charge of the project quit the group,
so now I have nothing to show for the hours of my life wasted on it and
nothing else to work on yet (though I can't really log into the group since
I'm back on dial-up with no time to download anything now...)

I was, of course, bitter that the OTHER new editor they hired a couple of
weeks after me got to do Getbackers editing...

> Full Metal Panic!

> Oh come on - it's not NEARLY as bad as "Chojushin Gravion"!

Haven't had a chance to watch it - I will only get a broadband connection
for the 6 months of the year I'm at uni for, so I can't download everything.
However, FMP is the sole really shounen thing the university anime club is
showing at the moment. It's just so BORING - though the only other person
there who's seen RahXephon hates it, and the other guys have only seen Eva
(UK, see?) so will lap up anything with breasts and robots. It's a very
shoujo club (though they save the Gravitation for special occasions
only...brain melting occasions and punishments...)

> Really? Through 20 episodes Mishima seems like a cypher to me.

Mysterious girl played by Maaya Sakamoto, gets my vote (especially as she
didn't have any other roles this year except...Kanon. Joy. Oh, and was
Kokoro Library this year? I don't really care, she's not fulfilling her
potential damn it! Either that, or she's just genuinely not very good and
thus doesn't get high profile roles...). And I believe she gets much more
interesting (besides, I've only seen the first six episodes - as far as I
should know she's dead!)

I like the cheesy Engrish of "Wind" - cultivate your anger before you
idealise, anyone? - and the pipeyness of it. Rocks is just really bad rock
stuff (note I do like some rock music!) , and it doesn't even have a catchy
chorus.

No idea - it's off the soundtrack I think, I *cough* downloaded the MP3
pretty randomly thinking it was just the OP, but it turned out to be a very
Oriental sounding song to the same tune, with piano, violin, and
plinky-plunky stuff accompanying a high female voice. The full version of
the OP is very good as well - much longer orchestral goodness.

PRINCESS TUTU SPOILERS BELOW AS WELL!

I was getting suspicious since, apart from her stupid head, there was a
silhouetted shot of her as one of Drosselmayer's puppets in episode 11. 12
has just been fansubbed, and I can't get it until the 16th when I get back
to uni...curses! (shakes fist!).

I forgot to put Neko-sensei on my list as well! I might have to marry him
now...

Hey Andrew, where did you get the MP3 to this song? I tried to get the
this and the instrumental version (TV and Full) but I can't find it anywhere.

The vocal version, which IS called "Juuni Genmukyoku", is apparently off the
"Getsumei Fuuei" single release (the ED was released as a single a while
back). The full length OP I think is from the proper soundtrack release
itself, though I'm not totally sure - it COULD be from the image album, but
again I don't know. I think I got both from an IRC channel on Aniverse
somewhere - I'm seriously tempted to order the soundtracks now, I've
remembered how impressed I am with Juuni Kokki's soundtrack.

Aniverse seems to be closed down right now. Is there some way to get the
songs off of you, if you don't mind?
