I've suffered from periodic bouts of sinusitis for the last 10
years(I've got one now), and subsequent to the resolution of one attack
I developed systemic urticaria (hives). A dermatologist I
consulted opined that my symptoms were related to my sinus condition and
the bugs that cause it, and indicated that he himself also had the same
problem. He offered little hope other than allopathic drug therapy and
maybe time(hasn't gotten better).

Although controlled with Atarax(bad-makes me very sleepy) and
Claritin(better) but not by Benadryl, when it re-presents itself
should I stop the Claritin, I first get generalized redness/itchiness,
especially on my inner forearms, which develope into hivous lumps, then
sheets, and are ultimately accompanied by breathing difficulties when my
throat/trachea join in(bad news).

I'm new to this list so while this issue may have been discussed in
earlier posts I'm not able to access the discussions. I'm wondering if
there are others who suffer the same complications from sinusitis and
have discovered a remedy and can help me get off Claritin and also end
the hives.

Curt - what part of the country do you live in?

Your symptoms are almost identical to mine - I break out in severe
hives every few years, and am in the middle of another outbreak right
now. Started the 5th. Prednisone has it mostly under control, but if
past experience is any indication, as soon as I taper off the
Prednisone, they'll come back. In prevoius outbreaks the only thing
the allergists and I have been able to come up with is they're being
caused by some kind of airborne allergen that is
produced/blooms/whatever only infrequently where I live (Los Angeles
area).

I don't know if the hives are connected to my sinusits, because I have
a lot more sinus attacks than I have hive outbreaks. But I'll take any
suggestion I can get right now (I'm sure you understand how THAT
goes!!)

I get bouts of eczema when I have sinusitis. I am taking Claritin at the
moment and itworks the best for me. I have read that each symptom should be
tackled separately i.e the sinusitis. eczema and the breathing dfficulties
(? asthma) If you have an infection what antibiotics have you been taking
and for how long?

Just to mention that I had systemic urticaria till two years ago, for 15
years then. At that time I had severe nose congestion and my doctor made me
take Claritin and Aspegic (Aspirin like, it's a NSAID - non steroid anti
inflamatory drug). When I took my first Aspegic, I had a severe
intolerance/allergy attack, with severe asthma.
I found much later that I have probably Aspirin intolerance, and that is
common in people that also have urticaria and nasal polyps as I had. Beware,
most doctors are not aware of this... I also have the notion that
anti-histamines (Claritin, Atarax, etc.) have a dry effect on your sinus
mucus, in such a way that drainage can get blocked in the sinus cavities. So
nasal irrigation would seem appropriate.
For the last two years I've had several complications, and have undergone
surgery less than two weeks ago. The only good news? Urticaria seems to have
disappeared...
