Well, apart from appearing briefly on local TV, I didn't achieve very much
by attending the Ionica auction. Did anyone buy anything?

Was it worth going? I was considering trying to pick up some of the
Sun kit, but I had no idea if the bidding was starting at some
baseline or not. Either way it certainly would have been too much of
a lottery for me to spend all day there. :(

It all seemed very expensive to me. The PCs were typically going for about
150% of their processor speed (i.e. 300 quid for a P200), plus 10% buyers
premium plus VAT, which seems extraordinarily expensive for 2nd user kit
with no warranty. I was after some of the chairs, but they were going for
about 90 quid (+10%+VAT), which was more than twice what I was hoping to
pay for them. I left after an hour or so, and popped back in the afternoon
to check that similar prices were still prevailing, which unfortunately
they were.

Nope. As bad a case of auction fever as I've ever seen.

True, but some of the higher priced PCs had very nice monitors. It
seems to me that many of the amateur buyers didn't know what they were
buying, though.

Fair enough, but they are really good chairs. Worth the Ł90, I
reckon.

I went. Was there from beginning to end. Time taken 10:02-20:36 (no
breaks). The auctioneer was a Yorkshire man and kept us going the whole
day with some humour. Prices were silly; 32,000UKP for the E5000, 2100 for
an Ultra Enterprise 2, 500UKP for a 486 laptop?

No, it wasn't worth going with the amount of PHBs there with fat and
clueless wallets. PCs went expensively for what you could get new, unless
they had a 21" monitor, then they went for silly money.

I got 2 HP LaserJet 4MV's for 450 quid each, practically new (in use
standards). It was a seller's (auctioneer's) market.

Sad really.

Example price.. Pentium 166, 32Mb Ram, Nokia Monitor, No cd-rom (!)
two hundred and sixty pounds + 10% + VAT = Ł336. Madness. Pure
madness. But you're not allowed to heckle the punters so I left.
Not a very good example of the astute business minds in Cambridge. :)

Never in my life have I been to anything so stupid -

The "similar" lots thing was a joke - they were purely basing it on the clock
speed so someone could pick up the first P1xx for 250 and then get subsequent
ones as an option - often with vastly superior monitors which was the real
difference...so you had to buy three machines to get hold of one with a 21"
monitor. The auctioneer knew nothing, which wasn't his fault.

A bad case of excitement on the most part. Fools who knew nothing.

I did have a good laugh though when an apple powerbook, worth about 20 quid
went for 200+.

I feel much better; I had planned to go, but was sick that day...

I was the bloke who disolved into hysterical laughter when that gimp in
suit paid over 2400 for each of four Ultra 2's. If looks could have
