Des's R1- mini review

I was a bit nervous picking the R1 from Des, as I hadn't ridden an imaginary
bike since I was six. Luckily, Des took time to show me around the bike and
even lent me his special jacket with two enormous chips on the shoulder
which apparently helps him to balance the bike.

After Des had gone off to meet his imaginary friends I fired up the bike. At
first I felt a bit self-conscious making "brum, brum" noises but it soon
became second nature. Of course the main advantage of riding an imaginary
bike is that you can choose the weather so I went for a quick spin around
Paris in brilliant sunshine. My imagination went into overdrive when I
managed to pick up J-Lo for a quick pillion ride and I really started to get
into the whole pretend bike trip.

Due to having J-Lo on the back I didn't manage to reach the 300mph top speed
claimed by Des but the R1 felt as least as quick as other imaginary bikes
such as the road going Honda V5 and the Proton FP1. Being a product of Des's
imagination the bike was fitted with a number of extras such as a violent
mood swing switch and a pop up Oxford English Dictionary, unfortunately I
didn't manage to test these as I couldn't imagine being so pedantic.

I did manage to make a test post with the R1 in my signature and I have to
say, in the context of making a post, the pretend R1 was indistinguishable
from a real one.

So in conclusion, when you consider the zero purchase cost and depreciation,
coupled with the ability to wind people up, an imaginary R1 seems a
worthwhile investment.

How sad is that?

Asking for a go on an imaginary bike borrowed from someone else.

Imagine your own and have a race.

Nope. Essentially, the art of powersliding a car; participants are judged
and awarded points for doing so with style, smoothness and speed.

http://www.drifting.com/

/Big/ time sport in Japan and starting to get serious over here.

[from drifting.com]
What is Drifting?
In drifting, the objective is to maneuver a vehicle through corners at
speeds and angles that exceed the vehicle's ability to adhere to the
roadway. Drifting is truly an art form enabled mostly by the talent of
the drivers to control the vehicle in such a state.  In the past year
alone, the sport of "drifting" has become an exciting new form of
automotive exhibition and competition in the US. GO DRIFT sanctioned
events such as the Falken Tire Drift Showoff competition and RS-R Drift
Festival have really introduced the sport live and direct to the American
public.

An example of some drifting action, here
http://www.ish2.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/altezza.wmv
(1.19MB WMV)

And this, ok, not competition, a stunt show -- does include some bikes, too):
http://nikita.hro.nl/downloads/movies/draft.wmv

(26MB WMV file, mind).

Enjoy.

Does such a car exist?

Nissan 200SX[1], 300ZX, 280ZX[2] and 260ZX I know of, but the 200ZX is a
new one to me.

[1] One of these was the first car I drove after passing my test. My
boss had one and wanted to know how fast it would go, but didn't want to
lose his licence. As I had a licence, but no car, he volunteered me to
find out, with him in the passenger seat. 140 was the best I could do.
[2] And one of my mates used to have one of these ... god, it was
awful.

Of course, I fucked up the car names, didn't I? It's ZX260/280/300
isn't it, not 260/280/300ZX?

'Twas on "Fifth Gear" last week on the club circuit at Silverstone. The
eagle-eyed would have spotted (or not) JW.

'Twas also in last month's Evo magazine [1] which is where I read it
first.

[1] Purchased 'cause it had a Cars vs Bikes article in it.[2]
[2] Guess the outcome :D

Well, if the issue in question was "Which would you rather powerslide at
high speed?" I have to say that I'd go for a car every time.

Test 1. How well do they powerslide?

Test 2. Is the vehicle reusable?

Test 3. Is the driver/rider still alive?

2-1 to the car, I'd say :)

Heh, very good, ya daft bugger.

Nope, it was a pukka thing about goin' round corners an' everyfink. Natch

Indeed. I've seen plenty of car v. bike tests over the years and
I don't recall ever seeing the bike beat the car around a circuit.

The last one I saw was on a Clarkson vid. MacKenzie on an R1 against
(I think) a BTTC driver in a Porsche Turbo, around Thruxton.
The Porsche won, but only just.

They tested several cars with the ultimate test being a Radical SR3
(albeit not the turbo). Macca beat it by a mere tenth having had twice as
many attempts and thoroughly cooked the tyres in the process.
:-)

Radical, incidentally, have some in-car stuff from various races on their
site, including Pembrey...
