I have a pair of dbx 161 compressors(*unbalanced 160's) and was wondering
if anyone knows about getting it balanced...like what is a good brand of
transformer for it or maybe a tech that could do the mod right.

thanks
Steve

I believe they're electronically balanced and the circuit board just
needs to be populated... the back panel even has been punched for XLRs
if memory serves me right.

Fletcher had some words re: adding a transformer output to dbx161's in
his Mix vintage gear article. The article used to be on the
mercenary.com website.

Working from memory...the board is indeed layed out for a differential
input and output...but good transformers sound better...

When you try using a St. Ives 31267 (input); and a Marinair 2567
(output), very large sounding things start to happen...best to have a
really good tech, and you damn well better have the schematic.

We did this for quite a few people when we had a service
department...since we don't do service anymore...I can supply you with a
copy of the schematic, the transformer information and the transformers
(note: the name of the joint is "Mercenary"...no freebee's on this one).

There are also some sources for balancing cards, active type, with good
chips they sound better than the original. I think Gaines Audio was one.

And this one is free on me, despite what some folks say about me!

Aw c'mon...leave it as it is!!!! The 161 sounds WAY more rock-n-roll
unbalanced than the 160 does!!!!
