I believe they're electronically balanced and the circuit board just
needs to be populated... the back panel even has been punched for XLRs
if memory serves me right.

Working from memory...the board is indeed layed out for a differential
input and output...but good transformers sound better...
When you try using a St. Ives 31267 (input); and a Marinair 2567
(output), very large sounding things start to happen...best to have a
really good tech, and you damn well better have the schematic.
We did this for quite a few people when we had a service
department...since we don't do service anymore...I can supply you with a
copy of the schematic, the transformer information and the transformers
(note: the name of the joint is "Mercenary"...no freebee's on this one).

There are also some sources for balancing cards, active type, with good
chips they sound better than the original. I think Gaines Audio was one.
