Does anyone know how to recover a single dynamic disc that can't be
reactivated?

All I get is the following error in event manager:
INTERNAL Error - The disk group contains no valid configuration copies
(C10000B6)

This occurs with either OEM Windows 2000 sp2 or OEM Windows XP Pro.
MS knowledge base just says to contact support and they can tell me how for
$195.

Usually the partitions can be recovered as normal partitions, by
editing the partition tables. Alternatively files can be copied to
another disk using recovery tools.

To provide additional information, you can download Findpart at

http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm

do from DOS or Windows 95/98/ME:

findpart all fp.txt

and insert (not attach) the output here.

The commands to add the partition to the partition tables on disk 2 as
a normal partition will be (hadum1.bat):

set findpart=edit
findpart 2 0 1 - 07 0 1 1 9731 254 63 0 9732 255 63 26
set findpart=
findpart 2 table fp2-1.txt

If you want to do this, then please download the batch file from:

http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/hadum1.zip

From the description and Findpart output, it seems as there may be no
internal damage in the partition, so the batch file may recover the
partition.

There will be an "NB" in the fp2-1.txt output file, since the actual
partition space does not end at a cylinder boundary.

If the partition cannot be seen after the batch file, it may help to
clear the NT/2000/XP signature in the MBR of the disk. It can be done
from a Windows 98 Startup Up floppy using the command:

fdisk /cmbr 2

(The batch file name is from your Organization field).

The batch file worked just fine. I can now see all the files on the drive.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Svend,

I have exactly the same problem, and I could not figured how you
calculated the new partition info. So I post the same fp.txt, what you
asked from Stephen.

The bad dynamic drive is Disk 3.

Here comes the fp.txt

Also I could not find the batch file, but I think (but not sure), the
content was only this:

set findpart=edit
findpart 2 0 1 - 07 0 1 1 9731 254 63 0 9732 255 63 26
set findpart=
findpart 2 table fp2-1.txt

Could you please suggest me a 'magic nuber' according to my system
info?

Thanks a lot:

Assuming the Findpart output was not edited except for some delimiters
added and wrong spacing, the disk with the "dynamic disk" is disk
number 4 numbered from 1.

If you had room for all the files in another partition, the command to
copy the files to current directory and below would be:

findpart findntfs 4 0 1 1 copy

Usenet/Google usually is too slow for me for partition table editing.
To verify the integrity of the NTFS partition you can do:

findpart findntfs 4 0 1 1 summary fp-a.txt
findpart findntfs 4 0 1 1 summary fp-b.txt root

and mail me the output files.

The method I use to verify the integrity of an NTFS partition is to
compare the results from a search with the results from a file listing
as suggested above.

If the results are equal or close to equal, and the search shows only
1 "tree", I consider it safe to make the partition visible by editing
the partition tables.

In this case it worked to change the ID in the previous shown
partition table from hex 42 (dynamic disk) to 07 (NTFS). That alone of
course only can be used if the disk contains an NTFS partition
covering the entire disk.
