Anyone else having this problem?

Every other day now, I find the phone has spontaneously turned itself
off.

I am still under 30 days on the purchase so perhaps I should send the
phone back. Another guy off a mailing list has said his has turned
off once and did not know why.

I need to get get input to see if this is a bug.

All input welcome!

possible loose battery? though not to be expected.

possible accidental operation of the on button? is it turning off in your
pocket, or when sat alone?

possibly triggered by a call/message coming in? maybe a full memory
somewhere, though I'd expect this to cause a restart, rather than a switch
off.

Mine has occasionally restarted at random, no worse than my PC. it's
switched off once, but that was in a pocket, so possibly accidentally
switched off.

Certainly take the phone back. a reflash may fix the problem, a replacement
certainly should. what version are you using (type *#0000#), mines 2.50

2.54

It doesn't seem to turn off if I kill the miniGPS process running in
the background.. but I need to do more experiments to see if this is
it.

Hey Gail,

I too have the Nokia 3650 from AT&T wireless with Version 2.54
(02-03-2003 NHL-8). I also experience the random shutdown, mostly
while in my pocket during a regular day. One night I had the phone
charging while on, and the phone was switched off in the morning!

Another bug I just noticed: in my office I usually have a "G" with 5
of 7 bars. Once in a while, I'd take my phone out of my pocket while
in my office and I have a missing "G" with no bars. I try to make a
phone call and I get "no service". However, if I reboot the phone, it
comes back up usually with the normal 5 bars.

Should I return this phone? Will I get just another one with the same
limitations?

Hi Shredrca!

Ok.. I am quite convinced that there must be a bug in our firmware.
Everyone I know with v 2.50 has never had this problem.

But I have v2.54 too.. and yep.. my phone spontaneously turned off
last night.

From what I have heard... it is easy to go to a Nokia service center
and get a firmware upgrade or in our case.. we may want to get a
downgrade.

I do not make many calls so I have not seen the other error you speak
of.. but I'll be on the look-out now.

all the best,
Gail

I also am experiencing this issue. The status of keyguard nor battery
life seem to matter. If you have AT&T I would DEFINATELY exchange it
within the initial 30 days. AT&T charges a $50 "processing fee" to
perform a warranty exchange outside of that perioud. I am going to
investigate having a downgrade of the firmware performed by a local
Nokia repair shop.

I have T-mobile... but this seems to be a definite 2.54 firmware issue.

Please report it to Nokia so that we can start building a case.

And please let me know what you find out about a firmware upgrade/downgrade.

Thanks,
Gail

How might one do this in a way that would be at all effective? I called
them and gave every available detail, including our suspicion that it's
related to the firmware version, but I received zero impression that any
of it had been recorded in a useful way.

US by any chance? can tell by the quick draw on the case building :-)

Generally, you don't need to do anything, the idiot customer service rep
might not have heard of the problem, but I'm sure you won't be the only
person to have called it in. new firmware revisions are coming out all the
time, the date on 2.54 is 02.03.2003 - which means it;s about due another
revision soon. Firmware bugs happen, and get fixed all the time. just keep
calling nokia and 'enquiring' about a new release. even though the idiot on
the other end of the phone doesn't know, the techies do, or will find out
from such calls, and correct the problem, just give it time.

Count me in as an owner of 2 3650's that do this .. (Turn themselves off
for no good reason).

I'm a TMo user as well.. My wife got fed up with this (customer service
sees call logs from us on this since mid May) and she was told it was
the battery (-- wait it gets better).

Cust Svc told her to go to a local TMo store to test out the battery.
She goes to one store here in ATL, and they look at her with a blank
stare -- "we dont open boxes b/c no one would buy the phone then .. and
we dont have spare batteries.. try another store" .. Went to the 2nd
TMo store (20 miles away) .. same story ..

But to the 2nd Store's credit, they get on the line with TMo Cust Svc
and listen to the lines that they are giving my wife. When it appears
that it's getting nowhere with Cust Svc, the store rep (who has been
lurking on the phone) steps in and champions the issue for my wife with
TMo Cust Svc. After 20 minutes of "policy discussions", the store
person was able to persuade the Cust Svc rep that a replacement was in
order.

I hope that what ever new OS there is fixes this issue. We're expecting
exchange phones here RSN (within the next 24 hours).

How do I tell what verson of S 60 OS I have?

yeah.. I got a blank-stare too. And the lady didn't even tell me that
after 6 months I could get a firmware upgrade locally. Can I?

Perhaps we can email Nokia technical support... maybe it will get
through to them then?

I agree....
How does Nokia find out about this stuff if they don't record our
problems when we call?

Always fun to see a company argue with itself. the lack of training and
proffesionalism is astounding.

*#0000# from standby, as if dialing a number.

even if it's the same, don't panic, just keep an eye on it - watch for it
going off - it may not. software bugs don't always affect every phone. If
you don't suffer, then don't worry too much about a firmware upgrade (if it
aint broke...) else, you'll just have to cope until the next version comes
along (due soon ish we hope)

thats because they get less training than burger flippers. so many people,
especially in the mobile industry have no idea what they are talking about.
you can get a firmware upgrade anywhere at any time. your provider or
insurer may prefer you to use a certain company, but mostly if you want an
upgrade - you get it dine - for free under warranty, if there is a bug which
prevents it working, then it is faulty, and qualifies for repair. Point out
to your provider that unless they fix the problem, you can't spend money on
your bill with them - they might just understand that bit.

> Perhaps we can email Nokia technical support... maybe it will get
> through to them then?

Possibly, certainly gives you more of a record - note though that this makes
it very easy for them to give 'standard answers' - cut and paste. these are
of no use, normally repeating what you told them in your original message,
and simply try to blame the network, or some other thing that avoids them
doing any work.

> I agree....
> How does Nokia find out about this stuff if they don't record our

They do, but the urk on the end of the phone doesn't know, even if you speak
to the same person an hour later, they will still not have heard of the
fault. speaking to a sales rep when getting my 3650, I was talking about the
problems I had with my 8310 a year previous - he had been in the job 2
years, and not heard of any problems with the 8310's - I'm sure most people
here know how much bunk that is, quite simply the most bugged phone ever.
the people on the phone never bother to read the rest of the fault reports,
so don't know anything about the buisness. they are there purely to tell you
that it's your service providers fault, but if you can travel you can go to
a service centre that won't be able to help you. clever.

Martin Crosbie

No offence to those who do know their jobs - there are some, and their
efforts are appreciated. I'm just talking about the vast majority who think
they can get away without doing any work. If I did such a bad job, I
wouldn't expect to spend more than five minutes with the company, so how can
they?

I am in Atlanta too. I don't expect the store ppl to know much. But
the phone customer service reps also said I might have a loose
battery. Has anyone taken a look at the beautiful design of the space
for the battery? That thing ain't goin nowhere. ;)

Most likely you will just get another 3650 with the same firmware, v
2.54.
Type *#0000# to get the firmware version.

all we can do for now is call... and then say you know 6 other ppl
with the same problem..... and that you all seem to have firmware
v2.54. (hint, hint).
And write an email too.

If we make our voices heard, then hopefully it will be fixed in the
next update.
I can definitely live for a while with the problem (knowing it's a
software as opposed to hardware thing). But it'd be nice knowing they
are working on solving it.

It seems like an obscure enough bug that it could easily be missed...
I think it might be a memory leak type of problem, but only they can
find out.

all the best,
Gail
