My laptop with win xp home becomes unresponsive after log-
in. I recently installed the two latest critical updates.
One update was for xp, one for windows media player. I
didn't immediately reboot after installation. I finished
what I was doing online, then I did restart from the start
menu. I let the machine restart to the login menu, then I
hit turn off computer. An hour later, I tried to start
up. Everything began well. I logged in to my profile.
The desktop has since never completely loaded all my
usually running applications. The system then becomes
completely frozen.

Early in the desktop start up I am able to execute some
commands. I can get safe mode to come up. The restart
the is required for system restore never completes
restarting. The system restore window that comes back
after restart freezes without finishing loading.

My norton antivirus has never completed it's usual
activation on start-up since this problem has begun.

What should I do next?

Ed

Just wanted to ask again if anyone has encountered this
problem, or has a next step for me to try. I can't even
system restore in safe mode.

Hi Ed,

Are you able to uninstall the 828750 update in Safe Mode from the Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel?
After uninstalling the update are things back to normal? If so try
disabling Norton before reinstalling the update including the real time scan
process.

Any change?

Thanks,
Lucy [MS]

Ed,

Does "completely frozen" also mean that there is no response
to Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

If you can at least get into Task Manager from that
you can do the things that Lucy is asking even though
explorer.exe may not be starting. Use its File, New...
dialog.

For example, to get into Add/Remove Programs
you can start
control appwiz.cpl

To get into the Services applet you could try starting
%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

Disabling your AV may be the most important thing to do.
It should not be allowed to run while you are doing updates.
It can't just be stopped either. It has to be disabled because
the updates which involve a reboot are done in two phases,
pre-boot and during the boot.

Good luck
