style names get "char char ..." tacked to end (Word 2002)

why does Word 2002 keep renaming my styles by
adding "char char... " to the end of what I see in the
task pane?

I use Word to create long legal briefs and I use styles
extensively. I also cut and paste within the document
extensively and rearrange things -- moving from footnotes
to text, for example, and vice versa. Sometimes, at the
end of a long editing or writing session, my task pane
displays a half-dozen different variants of "body text,"
each with a slightly different version of "char char ..."
or "char1, char1 ..." tacked onto the end. They just keep
multiplying. Can you help?

Don't know if this is affecting things, but I do apply
direct formatting in one situation (but I do it many,
many times in a document) -- when I type a legal citation
in the midst of a paragraph, I use CTRL-I to italicize
the citation and then CTRL-I again to end the italics.
Then I continue with my "body text" (or whatever)
paragraph. I know a purist would say to use a character
style for this, but it is SO MUCH EASIER to simply press
CTRL-I.

I have installed SP1 and SP2. I am not
using "automatically update" - it is unchecked
universally.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi Bill

Word 2002 SP-1 (or was it SP-2?) supposedly did away with this problem. And I haven't experienced it myself for a long time. Word
will still create, say, Body Text Char. But all the cha cha cha dancing should have stopped.

Are you experiencing the *creation* of Char Char Char styles now? Or are you reading documents that were created before you loaded
SP-1 and SP-2?

It's worth understanding how these 'char' styles are created. In Word 2002, you can have a paragraph in, say, Body Text. If you
select *part* of that paragraph and apply a different paragraph style (say, Style 2), then Word creates a kind of hybrid, called
Style 2 Char. It's part-paragraph style and part-character style. This only happens if, when you applied the style, some characters
were selected, but not the whole paragraph including the paragraph mark.

So be careful how you're applying the styles in the source document. Either put the cursor in a paragraph and select no text, or
make sure you've selected the whole paragraph including the paragraph mark.

For what it's worth, using ctrl-i for italics won't create, improve or worsen the situation.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna.

Thanks, that helps. It also raises some questions in my
mind.

First, let me answer your question: Yes, this is
happening in new documents I am creating with a new
template constructed since I added the service packs.

Your explanation of "hybrid" styles is new to me and I am
undoubtedly doing what you describe. I will pay attention
to that now.

But I now wonder:

(1) Do the service-packs prevent Word 2002 from creating
the hybrids (or displaying them)? Or are you saying that
even properly updated, Word 2002 will do the "char char
char" thing if you select text inside a pararaph and
apply a different style to it?

(2)Should I try to reinstall SP1 and SP2 or possibly Word
2002 itself? It came pre-installed by the OEM (Dell). I
went to the Word 2002 help menu and it shows "SP2" next
to the name of the program. It does not show "SP1", but
that might be because SP2 won't install unless SP1 has
been installed previously. Is it possible that Word 2002
has disabled SP1 in some fashion?

Thanks for your wonderful help.

This "char char" style naming began happening on my
desktop when the office upgraded from Word 97 to Word XP.
That was just a few weeks ago.

"About" tells me this is MSWord 2002 (10.4219.4219) SP-2.

This happens in documents created from scratch, but some
large old furry templates do load automatically. Could an
old template bring this problem along?

I ask because, as with 97, new XP blank docs come pre-
loaded with the Font Substitution "Times New Roman Bold"
for "Times New Roman" -- so I know something carried over.

The version shown in Help | About Microsoft Word reflects the latest service
pack installed, so SP2 does indicate that SP1 has already been installed.
The only time I've had persistent problems with Char Char Char was in a
corrupt document (converted from WordPerfect and insufficiently sanitized).
I was able to correct that problem and others by roundtripping it through
HTML (see http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm).

Suzanne: Great idea -- roundtrip through HTML. Thanks.

ps. If Microsoft isn't paying you MVPs a bundle, they
oughta be. If it weren't for the "mvps.org" website, I'd
have removed MS Office from my system long ago and gone
back to WordPerfect.
