Well, I've been through 3 Audigy cards and 3 different CD's, lots o'
tech support, none of which is allowing me to install the Audigy into
Windows XP Pro. All drivers and even my bios is up to date.

Windows XP Pro (all updates)
Athlon 1600+
Gigabyte 7-VTXE (Via 266)
Enlight 300W
512 DDR RAM
Lite-On CDRW
Lite-On DVD
GeForce3 Ti200
SMC 10/100

Has anyone installed an Audigy Gamer into Windows XP Pro? Any
suggestions? I'm about to go with Turtle Beach I suppose. I just don't
want to pay a 15% Restocking fee. Is this the best newsgroup to post in
for this?

Installed fine on my KT133A system.

However, there are a bunch of people on Viaarena's forums who ran into
problems with certain batches of the Audigy and the KT266 chipset. I
walked a friend of mine through the same issues (ranging from system not
POSTing at all to WinXP not recognizing the card) before we returned the
Audigy and bought from a different store. The repurchase solved it,
after arguing his way out of the 15% fee by waving forum printouts. Note
that he did exchange once or twice with the first store, just to confirm
that their entire batch was problematic.

Creative's taking RMAs on the card, too (and likely just sending back one
from a newer batch, if I had to make a guess).

I've been through 3 Audigy cards, one from newegg, one from CompUSA
locally, and RMA'd the newegg card to CL and the card they sent
experienced the same problem - Windows XP keeps redetecting the card,
and when I try to install the XP update from CL, it says the card is not
installed properly. When Windows XP Pro tries to install the card
itself, it fails with an "invalid data" problem.

Any ideas?

No ideas, then.

Myself, I pop the card in, XP doesn't recognize it, so I cancel out of
the Hardware Wizard. Then I run the install from the CD and install my
normal set of stuff (audiohq, mixer, speakers, diagnostics, drivers,
and manual). Then after rebooting from that, I run the XP update from
Creative's site. Everything's fine from there. My friend initially just
installed the XP update, and his worked fine too...he just didn't have
any of the applications.

Sounds like your particular system has an issue beyond the usual batch,
unless you've just had -really- bad luck with the cards you've bought.

Wow, your friend is lucky - when I run the XP update from Creative's
site (and one I found on the Creative Asia site), it says the drivers
(and card) must be installed from the original CD first. It won't do a
standalone install for me. My mobo is PCI 2.2 compliant, and Creative
says if possible, try to force 2.1 - I can't find anyway to do that on
my Gigabyte GA-7VTE. I've read here of a few people with the exact same
problem I have, but no answers yet (I've emailed them). It seems things
would be so simple if Creative would just post a stand alone XP driver
installation.

George, are you running XP Home or XP Pro?

Well, I am taking his word for what he did...whatever he did, it was
certainly driver-only.. I never tried just installing the update myself.
Does your original CD not work, or do you just not have it, or what? You
are supposed to install from it first.

If it's just a matter of needing an ISO for the original standalone
driver set, perhaps you should drop me email, and I can see if I can
help.

> George, are you running XP Home or XP Pro?

XP Pro. It's the Corporate edition, but that shouldn't make a
difference. Ditto for my friend with the KT266A setup.

I actually have 3 CD's (have tried 3 different Audigy cards) - not to
mention a 4th CD with SoundBlaster Live on it that Creative mistakenly
sent me. I keep thinking if they just posted a stand alone driver
installer for XP, things might be different (it's not like I have a
pirated "copy" of the Audigy card). I know of no other hardware
manufacturer who does what they insist upon.

No, I have 3 orignal CD's. One that Creative sent me even has a French
version on it.

Darn, I was hoping that was somehow to blame. I don't suppose you know
how to extract your "final" drivers from your setup, do you. Or how to
extract them from theCreative update?

Well, like I said before, afaik the update -will- install standalone. I
have no idea why it doesn't want to on your system. However, I'm not going
to confirm this on mine and risk hosing my own drivers. ;)

OK. Figured I'd offer.

Haven't the slightest. Sorry. :T

I have to agree. I was considering buying an Audigy until I read hundreds of
posts both on usenet and Creatives own forums of all the people having
problems with it and XP. I bought the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and am delighted
with it. Just be sure to get the latest XP drivers for it from their web site.

I GOT IT TO WORK! Finally! I decided to search the web just on "data is
invalid" and was brought to:

http://www.annoyances.org

GREAT website. Low and behold, my problem ahad to do with how Windows XP
handles permissions to use "unvalidated" XP drivers. Why did my system
bonk when others didn't? Someone chased the problem down to my video
card - a Leadtek GeForce 3 Ti 200. The Leadtek WinFast installer
apparently screws up the registry permissions. I might even be a nice
girl and call Creative to let them know about this... Here's the fix in
case anyone needs it (works for most all PCI car "data is invalid" error
messages, not just sound cards):

"Why do I get the message "data is invalid" when installing a device
driver?" This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the
Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards
and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start,
Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI and you
will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings
like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders
will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and
look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to
install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select
'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit
and then continue with the installation of your device.

And you know what? My friend has a Leadtek Winfast GeForce 4. :)

Coincidence or no? Hm...

Congrats on getting it working!

Thanks for that, I've been tearing my hair out trying to fit a new
soundcard, I had tried two Audigys and two Sonic Furys (Turtle Beach
Santa Cruz) latest drivers and everything. Even a mate who builds PCs
for a living couldn't figure it out. The week before I had installed XP
and you've guessed it a Leadtek GeForce Ti2000, I just figured it was XP
or maybe the VIA chipset on the MB.

I guess I'll give it another go now which to get Audigy or Turtle Beach?

I had problems with Audigy and XP, until I switched MOBOs to an Intel-based
setup. Then all the problems associated with my video card and sound card
disappeared. I was running an EPoX 8KT7A+/Athlon XP 1700 and could never get
the Radeon 7500 to work with the Audigy.
