I recently purchased the A7N8X mb along with 1 gig of pc 3200 ddr and
a XP2600+. After carefully assembling all components and adding a ati
9700 pro i was anticipating a real burner of a machine. Took a bit of
time to get basic bugs worked out but still have a problem that has me
seriously shaking my head. Everything works well together until i
plug in my dsl modem and reboot the system, where upon i have a 75
second lag before i can get my connection winow to pop up or any other
executable command to work. I have tried upgrading drivers for 3com
and nvidea...flashing most current version of bios....disabling 1 or
both of the built in lan ports and running a linksys lan card and the
problem persists. I have reformatted multiple times and tried
reinstalling all drivers in different sequences and still no joy. Am
using WinXP Pro with SP1. Any inputs would be gratefully accepted and
appreciated.

After this initial delay does the system perform as expected ???

Do you have a fixed IP number ?

Are you on a network ??, If so are you using DHCP ??

Go into "Network Connections"...
Right Click on "Local Area Connection">select properties...
On the "General" tab, select "TCP/IP" and click on properties...
Select "Use the following IP address:" and for "IP Address:" enter
192.168.0.1, for "Subnet Mask:" enter 255.255.255.0

This is a dummy ip so the nic isn't looking for one at bootup (which causes
the delay).

I changed tcp/ip to suggested address and it seems to have greatly
reduced the time before an executable command is allowed. Thank you
very much for your assistance.

You are very welcome.
It actually should have almost eliminated any delay.
How much of a delay is there now?

Good fix. I'd like add that if you do not use one or both of the built in
NICS it may be a good idea to disable them in the BIOS. This way no
un-needed Stack or bindings are created.

I definately agree with David. Disable the Nic you dont use.
Btw, most agree the Nvidia Nic is slightly better than the 3Com.
Oh, to keep your cpu usage down during internet usage (especially during
large downloads), goto Device Manager, find Network Adapters, double-click
on the Nvidia Nforce MCP Networking Controllers, goto Advanced.
Changed the "Optimize For" setting to "Throughput".
I (and many others) have found that this keeps the cpu usage steady at 0%,
even when downloading. If you leave this setting to "CPU", Task Manager
shows cpu usage go up and down between 1%-7% during downloading.
