I am about to sand a basement using the PC sander (with vaccum). I
will rent it for maybe a day. If you have used this unit what tips can
you give, what mistakes to not make?

If this works out I could rent or buy the sander for future jobs since
I do basement finishing.

yes

first plug in the sander and get it warmed up.
Let it run the whole time you do the rest of the following.

Take your 4 or 6" knife whichever is your favorite in your hand and go over
the edges and large blobs and nails to take off the highest spots as well
as you can without going nuts.

Then get a bucket and fill it half way with water your empty drywall bucket
will be good for this.

Then get a sponge and a scrap or old hand towel

place the sponge and towel into the bucket to make them wet then squeeze
them out so they are not dripping with water but have some water in them.

first use the towel and rub lightly on the drywall edges turning the towel
to a clean side as it loads with drywall compound.

you will notice that this not only takes off high areas but will fill in
slightly low areas or scratches, its like magic.

then after the area you used the towel on drys there will be a grain on it
so use the sponge lightly to smoth the area.

remember not to use too much water you dont want so much that it runs down
the wall you just need enough to moisten the area your working.

clean your towel and sponge often and change your water as needed.

this will go much faster then sanding and wont cause the dust or cost you $
for sand paper.
this is actualy similar to the process plasters use when they wet the wall
down and re troul it to give it a glass finnish. they never use sand paper.

then you can turn off the sander and return it to pay the fee.

:oP~

Clean the filter a lot. Will plug up quickly. Be careful not to keep in
one spot too long...will eat the paper off the drywall quick.
