I have a Gateway 700x and XP.

All of a sudden, I get a message on startup that windows can not
start. It asks me to retry or use last known config, etc.

I tell it to retry, and it usually works...if not, I can cycle power
and then the retry ALWAYS works.

I get this about once or twice a week.

I want this fixed, of course, but think there is a message I can not
read that would help me.

When I get the XP startup screen...JUST BEFORE this black and white
retry options screen, I get a blue screen with white letters and it
displays exactly what is wrong...for about 1/2 second!!

How can I log this? I hit pause but it does not seem to Stop the
screen from going away.

TIA

I knew mpsan was going to say...

Turn off "Automatically restart" in System Properties )Windows key + Break
key), Advanced tab, bottom Settings button. This will usually stop with the
famous BSOD so you can see the error; post what error you're getting.

GREAT! I will do this and wait for it to happen again.

I guess Windows Key-Break is a shortcut I never used...

Thank you.

OK...I am home. It happened again, but I, of course, did not change
the setup yet. OK, I now told it not to restart. I did notice that it
claims that it logs errors and I did look in the "event viewer" but
saw nothing "bad".

Well...I am just going to have to wait for it to happen again.

OH...for the first time I told it to go into safe mode. Same thing so
I believe it is not a driver...I bet it is shadow ram or something
else like a race condition. It always works if I power the system down
and restart!

My MoBo (Gateway /Intel D850MV)is at BIOS level P04 and Gateway gave
me a P13 version. However, I would like to see what this message says
before I change anything more.

Will let you know the BSOD info if I can get to it now!

<Keeping fingers crossed that it never does it again ;-) >

OK, it did it again and this time the BSOD stayed onscreen.

I have a stop 0x0000007E (C0000005, 806cef90, f9e495e8, f9e492e8)

I wonder if it does not like my video card driver? Strange it is not a solid bug.

7E is _usually_ USB power problems, keyboard, or mouse problems. Sound
Blaster drivers have caused it too.
USB passive hubs are common for this as the number of devices draw too much
power combined. A powered hub or a USB add-in card will fix that. Also, try
turning off "Let Windows manage..." for the USB items that have a power tab.
Logitech keyboard and mice are prone to this too; usually fixable with a new
driver from Logitech.

Was there any mention of kbdclass.sys or .dll (= mouse or keyboard).
If usbhub.sys was mentioned (= USB problem).

No, there were no drivers or hardware mentioned.

This Gateway has their version of the Intel D850MV and it has USB2
built in. Still, I only have my wifes Clie USB cradle on 1 USB port.
That is all and the Clie is not in only cradle for Backup.

I had seen a message VERY rarely about not finding a keybord. That is
a Gateway keyboard. I want to flash my MoBo as they made changes.
Actually, perhaps it is The SoundBlaster. I will look for updates on
the Gateway site.

Supposedly the last 3 of the Hex 32bit numbers can tell you exactly
which vendors hardware is the issue but we have no further data on
this.

Thank you again...I wish to only change 1 thing at a time so I know
what fixes it!
