Steve,
I like the Monogram kit myself. Nice details, open split-wingtip airbrakes,
nice cockpit, I think it's a good kit. IIRC CE has a cockpit update set for it.
There's a guy from the (again IIRC) 117th FS in Willow Grove, PA who posts here
from time-to-time, maybe he'll comment.

I agree that the Monogram kit is the pick of the bunch in this scale (the
AMT is just bad and the Tamiya kit represents a prototype), but I don't
know that the moulded-open airbrakes are a good feature, since I've yet to
see a photo of an A-10 parked this way. Would have been better to supply
the airbrakes closed (or even given the option!) and dropped the flaps
instead, since this is how the real a/c sits.

I've got to agree with you on the airbrake issue, but it does add an
interesting element to the look of the kit.
Yes, the ESCI kit is horrible. I recommend the Monogram kit. It's not
perfect, and won't produce a current A-10 out of the box, but it's the best
offering out there. With a little work it can be made into a current version
with the EGI and LASTE mods. A lot of people complain about the decelerons
(spilt ailerons/speedbrakes) being open, but if they hadn't molded them open,
people would complain about them being closed. With a little work, you can
close them up and make it looked like every other parked 'Hog. Be advised that
the decelerons aren't flush with the top surface of the wing when they are
closed, and if you do this modification reference photos of the real thing are
a must.
One detail set I can highly recommend is from a company called Flightpath. The
set does a nice job updating the weapons loadout and some exterior details that
have changed in recent years or are not included on the Monogram kit. You can
find the set here: http://www.djparkins.clara.net/fltpath/fpmaster.htm
While the kit cockpit is okay, I have used the Black Box resin cockpit and find
it does a nice job. I put a lot of work into the cockpit, since that's where I
spend most of my time on the real thing! If you do a current A-10, you'll have
to remove the air conditioning vents and tubing from the sidewalls of the Black
Box kit. I'm not sure if they have anymore in stock, but you can try here:
