After installing an ATI Expert 128 I discovered the "system freeze" problem
that the original drivers caused at certain web sites. I updated to the
most current driver and the freeze problem did go away as they said it
would, HOWEVER, now every time I try to get rid of the ATI Tray Icon I get a
"Blue Screen of Death" and have to reboot to get out of it. Even
Ctrl/Alt/Delete won't let me rid myself of this icon. I havn't gotten a
response from ATI yet, but then it is the holidays so I'm being patient, but
if any of you have any input on this one I'd appreciate it.

you can either disable it in msconfig
or disable it in display properties/settings/advanced/options

to run msconfig easiest just type it in run

To: JTJersey:

I got rid of the ATI task bar icon by going to Control
Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/Displays - make sure there is no checkmark
in "Enable task bar icon".
I have an ATI AGP Xpert 1998 with 8 megs RAM, which may install different
screens than your video card drivers.

Anyway, just a suggestion which may or may not work for you.

Thank you. Unchecking AtiPTA in MSCONFIG does prevent the ATI Task Bar Icon
from loading at startup, but if you go into your properties window and open
the Advanced Settings window the Icon imedediately appears in the Task Bar
again ! Unchecking the box under Options or any other method results in a
BLUE SCREEN "FATAL EXCEPTION" crash and requires a reboot, which is the
problem I'm having. Has anyone else experieced this?

I only get the Blue Screen when attempting to remove the tray icon and it
didn't happen with the previous drivers that came with the card. Otherwise
this Win98SE system has been rock solid since I put it together last July.

I've got the EXACT same problem with the "blue screen of death" when
trying to remove the ATI taskbar icon. I go to the Settings->
Advanced-> ATI Options and uncheck the Display ATI Taskbar Icon and
after I click OK I get the blue screen. In addition to this I have
TWO count them TWO ATI taskbar icons. One was installed when I
installed the original driver that came with the CD. The other was
installed when I installed the updated driver from the website. I
would like to get rid of BOTH of these icons.

Can someone from ATI please respond to this?

After fiddling around with MSCONFIG I finally got rid of the two
taskbar icons. Here are the steps:

1. Run MSCONFIG and uncheck either ATIPTAAA.EXE or ATIPTAXX.EXE
2. Reboot
3. Go to Windows/system and RENAME the files ATIPTAAA or ATIPTAXX with
a .BAK extension (or whatever extension you want)
4. Go to the Settings->Advanced->ATI Options and UNCHECK the "Enable
ATI Taskbar Icon"
5. Click OK

You should not get a blue screen of death now since it can't run or
un-run the ATIPTAXX or ATIPTAAA.EXE files since you renamed them.

I can't get the check and uncheck to work properly without the blue
screen of death with the files named with the .EXE extension but at
least I got rid of those taskbar icons finally!

Hope this helps!

Alright ! The icon is gone and the check box is cleared with no blue screen
of death. It worked a little differently with my system, but renaming the
ATIPTAXX.EXE file with the .BAK extension did the trick. I had already
unchecked the ATIPTAAA.EXE in MSCONFIG which prevented the icon from loading
at startup, but whenever I went into the Properties/Settings/Advanced
options it would come right back, then, of course, trying to get rid of it
caused the blue screen. Thanks, Eric and I'll be watching ATI's driver
update site looking for a notice about this.

What is the purpose of these files (ATIPTAXX.EXE , ATIPTAAA.EXE)

ATIPTAXX.EXE is the ATI Task Bar Icon.
ATIPTAAA.EXE is found in the system configuration settings (MSCONFIG) in the
Startup folder and will laucn the Task Bar Icon.

Pardon my typing, I've got a cold. That last line should have been "launch"
not "laucn" in case I confused anybody.

ATIPTAXX.EXE is the ATI Task Bar Icon.
ATIPTAAA.EXE is found in the system configuration settings (MSCONFIG) in
the

Startup folder and will launch the Task Bar Icon.

I also see the same problem under Win98SE. However, I just
upgraded the machine to WinME, and interestingly MS had a
slightly less current version of the 4.12 driver (4.12.6269
instead of 6292 I believe) on Windows Update, so I left that get
installed, and the problem went away.
