I just purchased Sony's brand new DSC-P71 digital camera which can be
hooked up with a USB port. In spite of my best efforts, I can't get
my OS (SuSE 7.3) with a 2.4.10 kernel to recognize my camera.

I tried the following, but to no avail:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(a) Loading USB modules (usbcore, usb-uhci and usb-storage)
(b) Tried mounting the camera as SCSI drive as described by a few
Linux experts
(c) Changing the Sony definition of the unusual_defs.h file to include
the DSC-P71
(d) Rebuilding the kernel
I just can't mount the SCSI drive (/dev/sda1 or /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sg1)
after I connect the camera to the USB port. The SCSI devices go
unrecognized andhence I can't mount them. I had set up an entry in
/etc/fstab for this but it's pointless since I can't perform the
mount.
Any ideas? I glanced intently thru several newsgroups and using Google
but couldn't use the ideas mentioned by some. I even tried gphoto2 but
it aborts with a segmentation error.
I even ordered the OmniFlash UnoMS USB Memory Stick Reader because
(a) the manufacturer states that this reader works with 2.4.1 kernels
and above
(b) some folks have had success with it.
Has anyone really gotten this memory stick reader working with SuSE
7.3 or perhaps Mandrake? Is Mandrake a little better at handling
USB devices?
Thanks in advance.
Im a new Linux user 1 month into
learning the OS (Mandrake 8.1)
and I was able to get my Olympus
D510 to work through the USB port.
dev/sda1 and it only works if
I go in thru the control center
icon on the desktop to mount it,
then I put an icon on the desktop
to open up the pic files once it
has been mounted.
it works anyway
I just bought the same camera, and I have just upgraded my kernel to
2.4.18, and I can see that it recognizes the camera when plugging it
in, but gphoto just wont eat it :(
I'm using gphoto 2.2.0, but apparently it wont find it.
Has anyone gotten it to work (or maybe one from its family, P31, P51)?
OK, now I fiddled with it some more, and it seems that there was no
reason in doing all these jumps
I just made a
# modprobe usb-storage
turned on the camera, tried with:
# cdrecord -scanbus
which gave the following output:
20:56 simpsons@bart% cdrecord -scanbus /mnt
Cdrecord 1.9 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2000 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.22
scsibus1:
meaning that it found the Sony on scsidev 1,0,0
This gave me a reason for trying:
# mkdir /mnt/camera
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
and wupaa, it mounted my camera... then I could use my standard file
browser to browse the files:
21:11 simpsons@bart% find /mnt/camera
.
./memstick.ind
./dcim
./dcim/100msdcf
./dcim/100msdcf/dsc00008.jpg
./dcim/100msdcf/dsc00009.jpg
./dcim/100msdcf/dsc00010.jpg
What the memstick.ind file does I don't know, but i'm able to view,
copy and delete the images in the dcim dir.
I haven't figured out if its possible to do some automounting on it
yet, but I guess it should be possible. The device is just a "regular"
scsi device.
If someone needs some more info, maybe I can provide it... :-)
Folks:
I finally gave up trying to get the DSC-P71 camera working with Linux.
It works brilliantly with the new Uno memory stick reader that I just
bought. All I do is plug the memory stick reader to the USB port,
insert a memory stick (with pictures) and mount it using the syntax
mentioned by Thomas i.e.
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera
Lights, camera, action.... we have pictures. The brilliance of Linux
never ceases to amaze me.
Well... I do the same with my camera, just plugin the USB cable in the
camera and into the computer, and mounts it directly, then there is no
need in fiddling with a reader (which maybe more convenient, but it
also costs money :))
Right now I only need to arrange some automounting such that it
detects when I plugin and remove the camera... Right now I
mount/umount it manually.
I have a DSC-p1 and when I changed computers to this one the driver
wouldn't work, got a new driver from SonyUK and had trouble with it
so got an Intelliflash memory stick reader - no trouble since.
Driver?
I'm just using the usb-storage driver from the kernel (2.4.18) and it
works like a charm.
Sorry - should have said 'in windows'.
Before I got the reader I couldn't download the picture files at all
in linux or winME but since both work well.
