I'm trying to locate freeware that would allow me to do something like
"Social Mapping" or what I term "Entity Relationship Mapping". I
don't know if it even exists, but I'd think something like this would be
out there somewhere. So... the details on what I'm after go
something like:

1) Enter various "entities" (could be people, companies, political
party affiliation, etc), and then enter the way each entity is related to
the other (biological / family relationships, employer / employee
relationships, follow the money relationships, etc)

2) Track events in time by entity.

3) Display a history of events for an entity (when they've made
direct associations, or the date & time that other events directly
associated with them took place)

4) Display how any two entities are related.

i.e. Person "Per1" works for company "C1". Person "Per2"
is an influential member of local political party "Pol1". The fact
that company "C1" receives a large government contract may
not be of much interest until you notice that "Per1" and "Per2"
are cousins. Thus, I'd like the software to show the chain that
relates two entities, and would like to show events in time
associated with these entities.

I've been searching Google etc for entity relationship mapping,
social mapping, etc. Perhaps this exists as a screenwriting tool
in the movie industry for verifying the accuracy of a movie script,
or maybe it's a tool used in the news rooms around the country,
or used in forensic analysis etc.

Note: I've been checking out some of the mind-mapping tools
without much luck.

Anyway, if I find an app with even a subset of this functionality,
then I'd be quite pleased.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I forgot to mention that I've also thought about using "family tree"
apps, but I believe the many-to-many relationships that I need to
track will quickly go beyond the capabilities of these apps.

I am not aware of a specific freeware program on this. However, here is
one that could show a similar idea:

http://mysite.freeserve.com/CliffHulcoopWeb/dating/

Extracted information from the site:

...This program (once downloaded) does not require access to the
internet and will not transmit any of the private and personal details
typed into it....
Type in details about people you know, and then it will produce a report
stating the best matches for each person. It can also give a score of
how compatible a particular couple are....

I think you need a a customizable
database program to let *you* to decide or pull out "share-fields". If,
off-topic here, you have MSaccess you can make one yourself. Yet, you
cannot avoid manual data entering with it, unless there is already
such a database exist, or unless it can collect data on the network
level.

And perhaps this, or something long this line, might be useful:

"inGridX is a rep-grid freeware offer to Kellian constructivists- who
make inferences about meanings by looking at the relationship between
constructs. inGridX does not use a dendritic pruning method but uses
Principle Component Analysis and may help understand the entanglements
involved in mind uploading."

Yes, it does exist, at least underdevelopment, for example:

Thanks RL for the suggestions! I've checked them out and think I'll
need to continue my search. I may need to go the way you
suggested and start development myself.

Still very open to suggestions & appreciate the responses.

TIA~

If you still have it, and the license allows ==> alt.binaries.freeware

Available at:

I've been playing with it, and it appears to track the data in ways
that are useful to me (excellent in fact!!!). I'm now struggling
with how to clearly view the data and quickly show relationships
between two apparently unrelated entities.... but I'm sure I'll get there.

Thanks for pointing me at this app!

It appears that Corel InfoCentral 7.0 has been turned into a product
called Analyst's Notebook by I2 in the UK. This product is payware,
but is precisely what I had envisioned. It's used in law enforcement,
tracking terrorist groups etc.

Cool stuff.
