All,

I am getting an add DHCP Client service error message
after I ran the upgrade for my Child DC. I have 2 root
DC's, 2 Child DC's and 2 member DHCP server's (split
scope) on my network. All were/are running W2K. The Root
DC upgradeed fine and the DHCP client service is running
fine. The Client DC is what I am having the issue with.
Here is the error code:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 8/22/2003
Time: 12:59:47 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DCCHILD
Description:
The DHCP Client service terminated with the following
error: Access is denied.

I can't find anything about it on the web, any suggestions?

Dear Brendan,

Thank you for your posting.

Based on the description, the issue may be related to the scope is disabled
on the "new" ( unauthorized) DHCP server, but left the DHCP server service
running.

To resolve this issue, stop the DHCP Server service on the unauthorized
server:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Services.
2. In the Service list, click Microsoft DHCP Server, and then click Stop.
3. Click Close.

You can also re-authorize the DHCP server to resolve the issue.

Hope the information is helpful.

Thanks and have good day!

Tried that, still not progress. The weird thing is that
I've upgrade 2 W2K3 Root DC's and 2 W2K3 Child DC's. This
problem only exists with both child DC's. The DHCP server
are still on W2K servers. I've tried to unauthorize and
reauthorize, but that doesn't help. Any other suggestions?

Dear Brendan,

Thank you for your reply.

Based on this, let us run the command "SFC /PURGECACHE" to scan all
protected system files and replace incorrect versions with correct
Microsoft versions.

Then use regsvr32 to re-register all of the base DHCP dlls.

Click Start => Run, type the following commands one by one:

regsvr32 Dhcpcsvc.dll
regsvr32 dhcpssvc.dll
regsvr32 mdhcp.dll
regsvr32 dhcpmon.dll
regsvr32 dhcpsapi.dll

Restart the computer to check the issue again, does the error disappear now?

I am looking forward to your reply. If anything is unclear, please feel
free to let me know.

Thanks and have a good day!

Benny,

Thank you again for you posts. I tried the solution you
recommended and got the following results:

"SFC /PURGECACHE" ran fine with no errors

"regsvr32 Dhcpcsvc.dll" ran but gave the message
dhcpcsvc.dll was loaded, but the DLLREGISTERSERVER entry
point cannot be found

"regsvr32 dhcpssvc.dll" did not run correctly (I assume
because it is not a dhcp server)

"regsvr32 mdhcp.dll" ran CORRECTLY

"regsvr32 dhcpmon.dll" ran but gave the message
dhcpmon.dll was loaded, but the DLLREGISTERSERVER entry
point cannot be found

"regsvr32 dhcpsapi.dll" ran but gave the message
dhcpsapi.dll was loaded, but the DLLREGISTERSERVER entry
point cannot be found

Restarted the computer and still the DHCP Client service
will not start and when you try to manually start it it
gives an "Access is denied" message, like it did before.

OK, played around with group policy and found there was a
setting for DHCP client service and it was set to disable.
I tried setting it to "Automatic" or "Not Assigned" but
that made no difference. What should the security be on
the settings?

Dear Brendan,

Thank you for your reply.

Based on this, please set "Automatic" for the DHCP Client Policy first and
then set to "Not Assigned" again. Is the issue resolved now?

If not, please open services.msc console to check the account to start the
DHCP Client Service. Do you set Local System Account to start the DHCP
Client Service?

I am looking forward to your reply.

Thanks and have a good day!

The name of the account that starts the DHCP Client
service is Network Service

Dear Brendan,

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that you use Network Service account to start the DHCP Client
services. To specify that the service uses the Network Service account,
click "This account", and then type "NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService" (without
the quotation marks).

Based on this, please choose Local System Account to start the DHCP Client
Service instead of the Network Service account. To specify that the service
uses the Local System account, click "Local System account".

Is the issue resolved now?

Thanks and have a good day!
