------------------------------------------------------------------------

Section 1: Introduction

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- 1.0 Who the heck are you guys anyway?

This is alt.games.final-fantasy.hentai, a Usenet Newsgroup that was
created some time around late October 1997. We are mainly dedicated to
the discussion of hentai and the Final Fantasy series from Squaresoft.
You're more than welcome to join the discussions that are going on, but
be careful, if you jump right in with out knowing what you're talking
about you're likely to get flamed.

- 1.1 What's hentai?

Apparently a lot of people don't know what hentai is (or any proper
Usenet courtesy either, we frequently get blanketed with crossposts to
the whole alt.games.final-fantasy.* hierarchy) sooo...

Hentai is a Japanese word which translates to 'pervert'. It defines a
class of anime that is of an adult nature. Which means that we are not
tech-support, game helpers, or people who will give you codes, etc.

(For more Internet/Usenet terms and Japanese words check out Section 2.0)

- 1.2 What can be posted to this group?

Pretty much any discussion about Final Fantasy, other RPGs, anime, or
hentai, as well as Lemons and Fanfics.

- 1.3 Things you should never do if you value your life.

NEVER ever ask for decensored pics or you will die very painfully. (See
section 4.0 for more censorship info.)

Don't ask for us to E-Mail you pics directly, this is a news GROUP and
it is not for your individual benefit but rather for the benefit of the
group as a whole. If you want pics, they're generally posted in another
newsgroup, and it's almost never done by request anyway. If you really
want pics, ask politely and someone may (stress MAY) post what you ask
for in the binary group. (For more on binaries and posting pics, see
Section 3.0)

Don't ask for help on the games. There are newsgroups and websites
designed specifically for that purpose. If you need help on one of the
games try one of the other groups in the AGFF hierarchy,
rec.games.video.sony, or a general gaming website.

Don't ask for passwords to any sort of adult or hentai site. Why would
we give you our passwords for free? Passwords = Money, because someone
somewhere had to pay for them. If it wasn't us then we at least spent
our valuable time finding or trading for them, so don't expect us to
hand them to you on a silver platter.

Most importantly, DO NOT POST SPAM. Nobody cares about money making
schemes, 'enlargement' ads, or crap you want to sell. Period.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Section 2: Commonly Used Terms and Abbreviations

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- 2.0 Table of common acronyms and Japanese words

AGFFH ------ alt.games.final-fantasy.hentai

ABPEA ------ alt.binaries.pictures.erotic(a).anime

ABWG ------- alt.binaries.worship.goescrunch

AGNPH ------ alt.games.nintendo.pokemon.hentai

ABPEFF ----- alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.final-fantasy

FF --------- Abbreviation of Final Fantasy

CT --------- Chrono Trigger

CC --------- Chrono Cross

LoZ -------- Legend of Zelda

BoF -------- Breath of Fire

DQ --------- Dragon Quest

DW --------- Dragon Warrior (U.S. version of Dragon Quest)

LoM -------- Legend of Mana

Hentai ----- A Japanese word meaning abnormality, sexual perversion, or
metamorphosis (and apparently airplane formation flying as well ^_^;;).
However, English-speaking anime fans use the word to refer to adult
oriented anime and manga.

Ecchi ------ The Japanese pronunciation of the letter 'H', a
simplification of the word 'hentai'.

Anime ------ Japanese animation, sometimes called Japanimation by
newbies.

Manga ------ Japanese comics.

Doujinshi -- A fan made manga which sometimes uses established
characters, often in adult situations. (i.e. Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2,
and Evangelion are common ones).

Fanfic ----- An original story written about a particular anime
series/video game/TV show/etc.

Lemon ------ Adult oriented fanfiction.

Yaoi ------- Male/male sexual situations. Another related term is
shounen-ai which means 'boy-love'.

Yuri ------- The Japanese word for 'Lily', which is often used by H-fans
when referring to lesbianism in hentai. Shoujo-ai, meaning 'girl-love'
is also used, but less frequently.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Section 3: General AGFFH Weirdness

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- 3.0 What happened to all the pictures?

Long story short: Pictures aren't posted here anymore, because AGFFH is
not a binary group. Binaries are most often posted to the newsgroup
alt.binaries.worship.goescrunch. Though AGFFH does technically have a
dedicated binary counterpart (alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.final-
fantasy), few people get it, AFAIK nobody ever posts to it, and from
what I've heard, it's full of spam. So, if you're looking to post pics,
post them in whichever binary group you get (or crosspost between ABWG
and ABPEFF if you get both). If you're looking for posted pics, ABWG is
probably your best bet, or you can try the other links in this FAQ
(Section 5).

- 3.1 Why isn't anybody talking about Final Fantasy or hentai?

Off-topic conversations are common among the regulars here, so feel free
to toss your two cents in, however, try not to start any off-topic
conversations if you're still a newbie, as the regs tend to get grumpy
about that sort of thing. ^_^;;

- 3.2 Just what is 'Lifestream'?

Well in FF7 it's the life energy of the planet... Oh, you wanted to know
the AGFFH definition of Lifestream? Hmm, how can I put this
tastefully... Let's just say that it's a certain sticky liquid that
contains half of the genetic code for creating a new life.

- 3.3 Just what is *THAT* picture I keep hearing about?

A looong time ago, 'that pic' used to specifically refer to a pic by
Darksilver of Interceptor and Relm. Later, whenever a picture that was a
tad on the extreme side popped up, it gained the moniker as well
(resulting in 'that MegaMan pic', 'that Pokemon pic', etc.). However,
this term hasn't been used in a very long time (if it had, we'd probably
have several dozen 'that pics' by now ^_^).

- 3.4 What's up with those long signatures?

That's something that was started in AGFF and sometimes carries over to
AGFFH. I don't know how exactly it started up, but you can visit AGFF
for more info.

- 3.5 You like what?!? That's disgusting!

Around here, there are bound to be things that someone else likes that
you don't. Requests for hentai containing yaoi, hermaphrodites, and
even Red XIII are fairly common in AGFFH. It's entirely possible that
you'll find some of the things that other AGFFHers like to be
distasteful. Deal with it. Tastes differ, so don't try to force your
view down other people's throats. Most AGFFHers take a dim view of
people that can't accept other's harmless little fetishes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Section 4: Censorship and Graphics Questions

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- 4.0 Censorship

Yes, it sucks but there's nothing we can do about it. Japanese law
formerly banned the depiction of genitals or pubic hair. As a result,
most of the images you'll see distributed in hentai anime circles have
either been censored by the Japanese government prior to distribution or
autocensored by the artists themselves in compliance with the law. (Most
Japanese are very law abiding people.) Underground doujinshi artists
have been known to produced full, all out, no holds barred, uncensored
works and not all hentai anime comes from Japan. Many noted artists
whose works are featured in these newsgroups are not Japanese citizens
and are not bound by Japanese law.

This law has since been repealed.

Although the law has changed, people's attitudes are slow to change with
it and many continue the practice of censoring or avoiding depictions of
the genitals or pubic hair. (Japan is a very traditional place after all
so any law that's been around for 50+ years has been ingrained in to
most people's minds.) However now that it *is* legal, such depictions
are sure to become more common.

Sometimes, net artists will take it upon themselves to decensor these
images. However, it isn't easy to find someone who does this arduous job
well, so even these are uncommon. Please don't go requesting that
someone decensor pics for you because it will almost certainly be met
with hostility. The chance of there being decensored versions of the
pics, or a person who will decensor the pic for free is slim to none so
don't ask.

- 4.1 ARGH! I CANT VIEW PNG!

Well this isn't very much of a problem in AGFFH but recently a lot more
hentai pics have been showing up in PNG format and causing turmoil in
ABPEA and it's bound to become an issue here some day as well. Most
standard graphics viewers today can view PNG files, but if you can't,
try these programs:

The law (Article 175 of 1907 Revised Criminal Code) was AFAIK not repealed,
but was judicially reinterpreted to not include pubic hair.

After WW2, the occupying Americans ended the old censorship bureau
(replacing it with their own, which was primarily concerned with political
issues). Gen. MacArthur and the Occupation forces then wrote Japan's with a
specific "no censorship" article, which is as follows:

[CHAPTER III: RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF THE PEOPLE]

"Article 21:
Freedom of assembly and association as well as speech, press and all other
forms of expression are guaranteed. 2) No censorship shall be maintained,
nor shall the secrecy of any means of communication be violated."

However, the Japanese ignore this in favor of the native Article 175, which
states in translation:

"A person who distributes or sells obscene writing, pictures or other
objects, or who publicly displays them, will be punished with imprisonment
at forced labor for not more than two years, or will be fined more than
Y5,000 (the amount is to be revised in proportion to inflation) or with a
minor fine. The same applies to individuals who possess the above with the
intention of selling." (_Japan's Sex Trade_, Peter Constantine, p. 169)

It was left up to the police to decide what was obscene and how much they
would enforce the law. A crackdown on pornography did occur after WW2, but
it was the Japanese police who initiated it, as the Occupation forces didn't
care.

The three taboo things were determined to be the depiction of pubic hair,
genitals, and the visible conjoining of said genitals. Minors were
exempted, because, after all, they weren't sexual beings (thus the rise of
"roricon" (Lolita complex--the fetishizing of young girls) and the less
common shotacon (the fetishizing of young boys)).

In mid-1991 the conflict between the artists and publishers on one side and
the censors on the other came to a head. The Japanese courts ruled that
shashinsha (photobooks, often of nude women in erotic poses) were works of
art and that they were thus protected from censorship, at least as far as
pubic hair was concerned. This broke open the dam which Japanese artists
and publishers had been clawing at for decades. For more information I
recommend Mr. Constantine's book (ISBN 4-900737-00-3; out of print, but
available through BookFinder.com <http://www.bookfinder.com/>) and _Asian
Cult Cinema_ magazine, issue #21, which has a several page article on the
subject of Japanese censorship. The latter is in turn derived from
_Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films_, by Thomas Weisser & Yuko
Mihara Weisser, with an introduction by Naomi Tani. Vital Books. ISBN
1889288527.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find more on-line resources appropriate to
the topic.

Genitals plain and conjoined are still prohibited from depiction, though
this is often flouted.

Urgh... Looks like I'm going to have to do some homework and find out what the
exact law is right now... Thanks for the heads up, I want the FAQ to be
accurate. Unfortunately the error is in the one part of the FAQ I didn't update
from MWF's version, which means I have another large section to rewrite... -_-*

Checked the homepage, and it says it's shareware. What kind of shareware is
it, exactly? Nagware, useable demos, and limited function programs are fine,
but thirty day trials and such don't get into the FAQ.

This actually left over from when I posted version 1.1 to ABPEA--I was lazy
last night and did not feel like doing the research again. Thus, this *may*
have changed.

That's okay--*I* want confirmation of the state of the law.

The opening screen nags you for five seconds at first (Ver. 4.0.8), then
switches to 30 seconds later on. It gives a count of how many days you've
been using it. The program is the full function one. The developer is
insane--the updates are constant. There's no way he can have a life other
than his coding. ^_^;
