VCR Rewind Troubles with Sony SLV-585HF: Error Code Lh 07m 02s

This nice, older VCR works great, except now it won't fast rewind.

When I press fast rewind, the machine starts rewinding at regular speed.
Then after 58 or 59 seconds, when it tries to kick into
high-speed rewind, the rewind stops and the following error code appears
in the clock display:

Lh 07m 02s

I found one web site that suggests that this could be an "abnormal
supply reel rotation" problem--but I don't know what to do about it.
By the way, when I do a regular-speed rewind, it too eventually aborts
with the following error code:

Lh 16m 02s

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.
(I'd like to find a service manual too.)

The gear driven idler may be binding. check the idler assembly for any major
signs of wear. Checks for any belts that may be slipping, due to normal wear
and tear.

Also, check the mechanism timing, too.

The idler seemed to be turning OK, but I'll take another look.
As far as I know, the only belt is a toothed one in the bottom
of the deck that did not appear to be slipping.
But, I have little experience with VCR repair and might have
missed something that would be obvioused to the more experienced eye!
