It's official: Seth MacFarlane is a pussy...

While I've always believed that Seth MacFarlane is a pussy, my theory has
recently been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. On the upcoming "Family Guy"
DVD, the Osama bin Laden joke is cut from "Road to Rhode Island" at Seth
MacFarlane's request. As you probably know, MacFarlane barely missed Flight 11
on September 11, the first flight to crash into the World Trade Center. While
I despise the man and all of his "comedic" endeavors, I'm certainly grateful
that he didn't die, but what makes him a pussy is this: as a result of his
near-death experience, he's cut the joke from the DVD. It was apparantly fair
game to make fun of Osama bin Laden when Seth MacFarlane was far away from the
African Embassy bombings, when the tragic deaths that occured didn't effect
him, but when *he* nearly dies during the tragic events of September 11 he
realizes how unacceptable the joke is. This not only proves that MacFarlane is
the biggest pussy in the universe, it also proves that his acceptability
barometer is calibrated to his own inflated ego.

Because of your subject line, I was about to defend Seth. But you're right,
he's being hypocritical.

Hate to say it, but I agree. It's a joke. A JOKE! It was hilarious
before 9/11, and it's still hilarious now.

While I despise the man and >all of his "comedic" endeavors, I'm certainly

Now that's a really fascinating comment, coming from the same person who in
June 2001 posted a message in this newsgroup in which you stated you wanted to
kill Seth MacFarlane, in an allegedly "comedic" context:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=20010603234409.029
81.00002973%40ng-fd1.aol.com

Yet now apparently now you're grateful he didn't die? It seems that after
September 11 YOU realize how tasteless your "joke" is, and your "acceptability
barometer is calibrated to (your) own inflated ego". It was apparently fair
game to wish death on Seth MacFarlane before 9/11, but when *he* nearly dies
during the tragic events of September 11, you realize how unacceptable the joke
is. Biggest pussy in the universe? Take a look in the mirror. Congratulations
on adding "hypocrite" to your already outstanding resume of idiocy.

While I do wish it was kept on the DVD, many people find absolutely any
reference whatsoever to bin Laden painful and just not funny, even if it's just
a cartoon. A joke not only about him, but him sneaking weapons through airport
security just cuts too close to the bone for a lot of people, post 9-11.
Look at it this way: suppose a relative of someone who died in 9-11 picks up
the DVD for some laughs? What do you think their reaction to that scene is
going to be. The show is about having a laugh, and I really don't think anybody
is going to be falling off their couch in stitches at that one, these days.
While I'd prefer it to be on the DVD, I fully understand why it won't be there.

I realize the joke was in poor taste and have stated numerous times on this
newsgroup that I shouldn't have written it but I've never once considered
begging google.com to remove it from it's archives. I said it, I can't change
that, and I'm not going to try.

It should also be noted that it would have been perfectly acceptable for
MacFarlane to explain the joke and apologize for it on a commentary track, or
to add a disclaimer, but he chooses to cover it up like a little bitch. He's
pretending it never happened, which is censorship, pure and simple, and it's
flat-out laughable when you're talking about someone who tried (in vain) so
desperately to craft edgy, no-holds-barred comedy (on network television, which
is a laughable endeavor) which sucked the life out of the comedy itself.
Anyways, I'll say it again: I made a comment I wish I hadn't made, but I'm not
denying that I made it, nor am I trying to cover up the fact that I made it.
Here's a link to the post in question. Feel free to take a look:

What about the families of those who were killed in the Embassy bombings?
MacFarlane didn't give a shit about them at the time, yet Osama bin Laden was
just as responsible for their deaths as we was for those who died on September
11.

it is rather gay especially since South Park made countless Bin Laden &
Hussein jokes and even did whole episodes around those characters and I bet
when the DVD's come out with those episodes nothing gets cut.
Shame Seth chose this route and pussied out I have lost a little respect for
him for that.
As a comic you should stand behind your material and freedom of expression
as an artist once you start editing yourself then others follow and your not
true to your art and considered a sell out.

What about the child that was killed in a similar way to some other
randomly selected scene.

Family Guy is funny, it attacks everybody and everything, and it's bound
to offend some people. Such is the way of things, life goes on. A
warning would have been more then sufficient.

Lets also look at comedians who, to this day, mock airport security. Is
this really any different? Is it Bin Laden's presence, or the mockery
of airport security that is the problem here?

You have no proof that Seth had any say in the matter.......Fox edited the
scene out upon rerunning the episode on TV.

Most likely, yes. (I don't own it yet.) But, how do you know?

Where is the proof that Seth requested that the scene be cut
from the DVD? Or the reruns, for that matter?

How exactly do you make the connection between the joke in that scene and the
Embassy bombings? The joke in question has, in hindsight, specific relevance to
9-11, but no specific relevance to Embassy bombings, so you can't claim that he
"didn't give a shit about them". It seems more likely that he DID give a shit
about them since he chose to insult bin Laden by portraying him as a buffoon.
By your logic, is nobody allowed to make fun of bin Laden whatsoever, for fear
of offending anyone? It's a much needed release for a lot of people to see this
hated figure made fun of, but the joke in question would now not exactly be
"fun" for a lot of people. There's a difference between just poking fun at a
figure like that and a specific joke which in retrospect is seen as in poor
taste, you're the self-appointed usenet governer of comedy after all, so you
should know this.

That would be a _terrible_ shame if it was cut. I hope it wasn't Seth's decision.

BTW, to complete Devils's summary: Stewie sings "I'm a Little Teapot" as
his valise of weapons goes by on the X-ray monitor (a throwing star?
brilliant!), and binLaden sings "I Hope I Get It" from _A Chorus Line_ with
enthusiastic choreography.

Granted, bin Laden sneaking weapons onto a plane, is ironic as history

To the moron (CLOSEDOWN8) who started this thread without any proof,
here's what Seth had to say in an interview with tvshowsondvd.com:

Interviewer: "I noticed "Road to Rhode Island"...there's some footage
missing; an Osama bin Laden joke was cut."

Seth: "There was some debate over that. I kinda stayed out of that
debate because I didn't really have a strong opinion one way or the
other. There are arguments for keeping it in and arguments for taking it
out. The argument to keep it in is that's how the show aired and it was
broadcast this way and it aired two years before September 11, and so
there's a bit of entertainment historical value there. And obviously the
argument for taking it out was that because it was one of the biggest
tragedies, there was some thought that it might bring down the rest of
the episode when that comes up. There was some thought at one point of
putting it on separately at the end, and that was really...I guess it
was a legal decision that Fox made to leave it out. It's unfortunate in
that it's a part of the episode that was produced and was aired and is
sort of gone forever, but it's a small loss in the grand scheme of
things."

But the episode aired long before 9/11, so acting like the sequence never
existed is revisionism, pure and simple, and that's just bullshit. There's
also the fact that the episode was still offensive to the familes of bin

Hey, Lucas choose to *add* scenes to the original Star Wars Trilogy. Not
everyong liked the new cuts, but at least they weren't missing anything they
had originally been shown with. Unlike Speilberg, who changed toy guns to
walkie talkies just prior to the DVD release of E.T.! 9/11 is a sensitive
subject, and we all need to be aware of what happened. But editing content from
a cartoon series that originally aired *before* the event is taking the PC
ethic a step to far. McFarlane includes Jew jokes in several of his episodes
(in fact, the season 3 DVDs should include a Jew related episode entitled "Once
Upon A Weinstein" that Fox wouldn't even air!). But I don't take offense to
them. I'm Jewish, BTW.
