I have a Wrangler, 2000 6 cylinder, stick. As soon as I got it, it started
popping out of first from time to time. Some days, never, others, five times.
Of course, when I tried to show the dealer this, I could not duplicate the
problem. They eventually swapped out the transmission and I really have not
had any trouble until recently. It did it twice yesterday.

Now look, it ain't me! Been driving sticks for 20 years.

Has there been a problem that anybody's heard of? If the Jeep is placed in
first properly, what would cause it to pop out randomly? I mean, It pops out
with a BANG too!

I had the same problem--the dealer replaced the transmission without much of a
hassle (They couldn't find anything the first time). Chrysler must be aware that
there is a problem, so hopefully they'll replace it again.
Good Luck

I also own a 2000 Wrangler 6 spd. - I have had it pop a few times, but I
think it was my own fault. Not getting it all the way into gear, cheating on
the clutch. Have you checked the TSB's?

That was my first thought... that I was cheating. But, there's no question.
It's not me. What's TSB's?

By any chance have you installed a body lift on your TJ? Those can
cause similar problems due to the new body height limiting the shift
lever range of motion.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. My understanding is that they are they are
technical 'heads -up' to DC mechanics. I wish I had the URL:\\ for the
posting, but I don't offhandedly. It comes up in here a lot - it might be on
the server archive.

Hey,

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you, but I can at least
guarantee that you're not the only one with this problem...

Mine pops out of first constantly... pretty much every third or fourth
start in first gear causes it. And I agree that it pops out with a
bang too...

I've had my Jeep in to the dealer once so far... and they couldn't
duplicate the problem themselves so they ignored it. I'm going to
bring it in next week and make sure they see what's happening. I gotta
say that I'm not encouraged by the fact that your swapped-out tranny
is still doing it...

As my girlfriend so aptly put it "You paid how much for this *thing*
and it pops out of gear?!?" ;-P

No, everything's stock. Got 30" tires, and it's loaded, but all stock.

Mine has done it once on a hill. At first I thought that I had blown out my
rear (again) since I was revving the engine and rolling backwards :( It was
an easy start and I was sock at the time. Just put it back in first and
drove off. I know that with my 1" body lift and T/C drop kit (about 3/16"
of washers) it would pop out of second all of the time and sometimes in
reverse. This was because the shifter boot caused binding and didn't let it
click into gear. The shifter spring kicked in and would return it to
neutral as soon as torque went through it.

My 2000 TJ pops out of second during cold weather. Haven't seen it at
all this summer.

Mine was worse in the winter. The boot was cold and thus wouldn't flex as
much. After a long trip, the boot was warm and it would shift like the
summer.

Yeah, mine was worse in the winter too... a little. But is was definately a
summer problem also. I remember, before the tranny was replaced, that once, I
held the shifter into first manually and took off. Despite my holding it in,
she popped out anyway!

Any tranny mechanics out there that could explain why, when you put it properly
in first gear, that it would pop out?

I think my 'pop out' has more to do with a marginal second gear
position, which, when combined with cold (read as stiff) tranny oil, it
simply won't hold in gear.
