Can I insert "Continued" in a table heading when the table crosses table boundaries?

In Word 2000:
I have hundreds of tables (across fifty documents) whose length varies from
two rows (including heading) to hundreds of rows. When the table crosses the
page boundary, I would like the heading row of the table to reflect that the
table is continued. It can do that with the word "continued", or by
inserting a number (or by any other mechanism that makes it clear when the
table is continued).

Since the tables and the documentation are "live" (constantly being
updated), I do not want to use manual page breaks or manual headings.

All the behavior I've seen so far in my experiments implies the Table
Heading row is evaluated only once, then simply repeated ("Table > Heading
rows Repeat").

This feature seems like such a common requirement, I have to believe it's
staring me in the face, and I don't see it...

Thanks for any suggestions...

This is a feature that has frequently been requested and may yet make it
into a future version of Word, but it is not currently available. You can
increase the chance of its someday being available, however, by writing to
msw...@microsoft.com. Be sure to include "Word" in the subject line so your
request will get to the Word development team.

Hi Matthew,

There is a workaround available if you're willing to put some effort into
it.

The technique is this:

1. Put the word "continued" into the heading row at the top of the table.
2. Anchor a textbox or a drawing rectangle to the paragraph immediately
preceding the table, then lock the anchor in place, so it remains outside
the table, and then and only then drag the textbox or rectangle over the
word "continued." This will hide the word on the first page of the table but
if the table laps over to additional pages, the textbox/rectangle will not
be repeated because it belongs to the paragraph immediately above the table,
rather than to the heading row.

If you need help figuring out how to anchor an object to a specific
paragraph, write back and someone is sure to offer further help.

I hestiate to include this suggestion, since it's just occurred to me, I
haven't tried it and neither of the experienced MVPs Suzanne or Bill have
suggested it (so perhaps it won't work):

Can you include one of those "conditional field codes" in the header along
the lines of

IF {page}>1 "Table Continued" " "

Sorry if the syntax is wrong; as I say I just thought of it, but would it
not work?

Hang on, I've just realised why it won't work. The table heading row stays
fixed throughout the whole table. Whatever is displayed on the first
heading row is just repeated again and again, so the field code would not
update across the different pages and produce the required effect.

Now I know what Matthew meant when he said "the Table Heading row is
evaluated only once, then simply repeated".
