Which model do you have?
Moving a TV from the UK to OZ might cost as much as buying a new one.
While both countries use the PAL broadcast standard, I read that in Oz
the electron beams scans right-to-left rather than left-to-right (or
possibly vice-versa).

I agree it may be better just to sell the set in the UK and buy a new one,
you don't have to worry about the PAL tuner since this TV has a digital DVB
tuner, it should work ok as long as the TV can decode 8K carriers opposed to
the 2K carriers used in the UK, the vast majority of boxes/TV's sold over
the last couple of years are able to handle both.
However, the aussies have Dolby Digital, UK TV's don't have a AC3 decoder so
you wont have sound, however they are meant to broadcast standard MP2 so you
will be alright, but obviously you wont have any surround sound.
The aussies also transmit HDTV in hierarchical mode, your set will only be
able to receive the high-priority SDTV broadcasts.
And lastly the UK uses a standard called MHEG for interactive services
whilst Oz uses the superior java based MHP standard, your TV wont be able to
receive any of that.
The Oz system is much better than what you'll find the UK, 8K encoding so
you wont have electrical impulse problems, Dolby Digital, HDTV and decent
MHP interactive services.
The UK DTV system was the first in the world, consequently is sucks ;)

FYI, i have the KV-32FX60U, 100Hz flat screen. We only bought it a year ago,
so I guess it's a fairly recent model.
Also, as we are moving permanently to OZ, shipping costs are covered anyway,
so is it worth taking in the hope that it works?
thanks

Sounds like an above-average set (only the higher-end PAL TVs have the
100Hz feature), but I suspect in the longer term, you'd upgrade in a few
more years anyway.
Sony Australia has just introduced a 34" direct-view/widescreen HDTV
which displays PAL at 100Hz and 1080i HDTV. No indication of NTSC,
though I'd assume it would also show this.
They also have a 36" 4x3 aspect-ratio unit which offers both PAL and
NTSC, DRC for both standards, component inputs and the vertical squeeze
for anamorphic DVDs.
If I ever moved to Oz, I'd buy at least one of these the moment I got
off the plane!

Will he also have to turn the scan coils upside down?

Sounds almost like the mistakes [because of the early adoption] of 405 and
NTSC all over again.
However compared to satellite, the terrestrial digital market in the UK is
still relatively small, but the recent announcement of an inexpensive
digital converter, and maybe soon to be followed by cheap digital TV's may
well vastly increase the take up of DTT.
Therefore do you think that it's now too late to bite the bullet.. or is it
possible that a little bit of pain now, might save a great deal of pain
later?

For sony expect to pay $A2,500 - $4,5000 depending on the model you want.
Divide by 3 to turn it in to that wierd UK currency I don't have a symbol
for :)

There's a reason why the market down here isn't flooded with receivers from
the UK and that we still don't have DVB tuner cards for PC's.... the DVB
system are not compatible. If your TV has regular PAL inputs you've got a
hope in hell but you'll need to buy a STB when you arrive ($A500 to $A900).
Go read aus.tv.digital if you want to hear about all of the problems we are
having with digital TV (in particular channel 7). Once these are sorted out
I'm sure digital will be great but until then I'm glad I've still got
analog.

thanks again, Oz here I come.
