Mother f*ck..........Sonic Soft Encode is one flaky POS. On my XP
system, it seems I can encode about 2 WAV files to AC3 perfectly
before Soft Encode starts to crash every single time I use it. If I
trash my drive and reinstall XP, it works for a few times and then
dies again. This blows. I can't believe there isn't some god damn
freaking software package that can take WAVs and convert them to AC3.
Am I screwed until Sonic Foundry adds support for converting to AC3 in
Vegas Video 4?

http://www.authoringware.com/ has a new ac3 encoder, here is the email
I got from them about it:

"We have a Dolby Lab certified AC-3 2-channels encoder. The list price is
$450USD. This includes $170USD license fee to Dolby Lab. A copy of
certification is also available upon request. The encoded AC3 is fully DVD
compliant.

AC3 encoder was newly released to the market two months ago. We have not
prepared any nice Spec sheet. I only can briefly state the features below:

1. 2 channels support (audio coding mode - L, R)
2. bit rate is from 96 kbps to 448 kbps
3. sample rate is 32KHz, 44.1KHz or 48KHz
4. auto select for bit stream modes (CM, ME, VI, HI, D, C, E, VO)
5. karaoke is not supported
6. file created in compact format (no ext time codes)
7. this encoder is designed mainly for DVD applications.

There will be soft key for copyright protection. All software product is
on-line downloadable. All software sales are final.

Again this encoder has been modified and certified by Dolby Lab in US.
Numerous tests had been conducted before final release.

We will provide 6 months free tech support on all software products, by
email or by phone."

I havent bought it yet though. $450 is stiff, but a lot cheaper than
soft encode (about $900 iirc)
