You didn't say if you tried installing updated motherboard drivers.
Or perhaps you did install them and that's what messed up the usb?
Updated doesn't necessarily mean better. Also, there should be
an error message in your device manager usb properties.
This did not happen as a result of trying to update motherboard drivers. It
developed suddenly after months of using USB with no problems, however, I
had been installing a USB device (network) just before the problem
developed. The problem is that there is NO usb root hub showing up in device
manger so there is no "error message"!! Only host controllers appear with a
yellow excalamtion mark because drivers can't be loaded - presumably because
the root hub is not present. I have now checked the registry and the
usb_root entry is missing from the sytem\currentcontrolset\enum\USB section
of the registry. However, regedit will not allow this part of the registry
to be edited.

So the error message indicates that drivers cannot be loaded for
this device. But you haven't tried downloading new drivers and
reinstalling the device. (I would uninstall the usb network
device first, assuming its still there.)
You don't seem to understand the problem - the reason that drivers coudn't
be loaded is that win2k no longer detected the USB root hubs (USB requires
these to function properly). You can't load drivers for a device that isn't
detected!!!! The host controllers can't work without a root hub. I tried
EVERYTHING and I do mean everything but nothing could persuade the damned
thing to detect the USB root hubs. In the end I did a format/reinstall and
the root hubs magically appeared again and everything is working fine.
However, I would love to know what went wrong with the original
installation.

Just what I've read on this forum, win2k has USB problems. I gave
a lot of advice you didn't even try.

Only in your case.
I appreciate you trying to help but which part of the phrase "I tried
EVERYTHING" didn't you understand? By everything I mean all that you
suggested plus about 100 other ways of getting it recognise the root hubs.
Which of your suggestions would have persuaded win2k to recognise the
devices so that drivers could be installed? I also searched extensively and
there is no evidence of win2k having particualr problems with usb - quite
the reverse, nearly every problem I came accross was in Win98 or Me. There
were a few (very few) reports of problems similar to mine - but
unfortunately no solutions!

It's been mentioned on this forum! Don't you know how to search Google!
Geez!
(Hehe)
I certainly do - but I seem to be less skillful than you. Please show me the
examples of problems exactly the same as mine - like I said I am still
interested. Otherwise please shut up and go away!

Oops! Unfortunatley I am not so good at posting :). This reply was meant
for "Malenor" - your response was top posted and I was looking at the
bottom of the thread when I replied.
Sorry

Well why don't you look where you're posting!!!
From arrogance to obscenity so quickly! Put your money where your mouth is
and show us the examples that you referred to. Otherwise I suggest you
return to humanities.philosophy.objectivism. Perhaps in future you would
benefit from applying a more philosophical approach to newsgroup posting
before you get a reputation for being a silly Kant.
